Listerine is good for fighting plaque and fresh breath but if we're talking purely teeth whitening, Hydrogen peroxide is the better option.
Use both for max results.

I use to get lots of plaque build up when using a manual brush and floss, switching to electric has been a game changer in all honesty.

Had jacked up teeth until last year. My two front teeth didn't line up, one was set back from the other so it looked like I had a buck tooth. Chipped the back one and had to get a crown. Had them make the crown a little thicker than usual to line up with the other tooth. Now my smile is even.
Wife is currently doing Invisalign to close a gap between her front teeth. She's only in month 2 of 8 so we will see how it goes

I dont see the point in getting them professionally whitened as they literally use the same ingredients as above but charge 10x the price.
Brb spending literally 5 quid on the basics while they charge £200-300 lmao.
That being said still go to the dental hygienist every 6 months for a deep clean (not whitening) as removing the plaque instantly makes your teeth look whiter anyway and more importantly retains good oral health.
When I go for a deep clean I chose airflow as it's alot more comfortable and generally removes plaque better. I pay £75/$100 and my teeth look and feel fresh as fuk.
Heres a video of the procedure for deep clean, I get the one on the right usually done within 15 mins or so:

Have a lot of gum issues from neglecting flossing and brushing too hard growing up.
only went to the dentist for the first time EVER at 26 and had to change everything.
Now I need to get gum surgeries or i can apparently lose teeth. costs like 10k for whole mouth though which I cant do yet

I never really neglected brushing, well a couple of times I only brushed once a day but flossing never crossed my mind when I was younger tbh.
It's scary how many people don't floss regularly or are even aware that's it's just as important as brushing.

So my two upper front teeth look like they're chipped/grinded off and my dentists suggested that I get crowns on both of them. My understanding is that crowns can't get whitened so i'm trying to whiten my teeth so that I don't end up with yellowed crowns or having to replace them with whiter ones later on.
In my current routine i've been using a Philips Sonicare with W3 brush heads, colgate optic white renewal paste (3% hydrogen peroxide), optic white advanced mouth wash (2% hydrogen peroxide) and optic white pen (5% hydrogen peroxide) overnight. Been doing this since mid-February and my teeth do look significantly whiter but i'm not 100% satisfied yet with the results. My teeth in front do look mostly white but all the side teeth still are a little yellow. I just upgraded to the Pro series Optic white paste with 5% hydrogen peroxide and was considering using Crest 3D white-strips. My appointment is in April 20.
I also plan on getting Invisalign. I had braces in high school, eventually stopped using the retainer and my teeth have shifted a bit. I would only have to wear them for 6-months. I got quoted around $8k which I thought was ridiculous so I changed my insurance type that covers Orhto so now would pay around $2.5k
How long did it take you to get you teeth white?

Also if you haven't visited a dental hygienist, I'd highly recommend it. Already posted a video above of what I get done, getting rid of unwanted plaque is a big game changer IMO.

I paid $1800 for the Invisalign treatment (7 months) and $500 for retainers.

Also regarding not taking a step to fix it, I know people with jacked teeth who went to the dentist and told them explicitly what they need to get fixed etc.
They're over here saying the dentist is a "scam" while you have bleeding gums and yellow teeth. A lot of Americans think like this

And dentists do be trying to tax you for some bullchit a lot but to just neglect teeth is a big wtf.
Dental Picks are needed as well, since the plaque can calcify and regular floss string aint gonna cut it.
