Parts AND labor prob go into the price of a car. And from there how much it's been used

But your avg. Person can't know the parts and labor cost (maybe if asked? Theoretically? They prob wouldn't anyways?)

There were cars with more mileage selling for the same cars with less, etc., etc. Location prob matters too

So, like I said.. A LOT of discrepancy and A LOT of leeway for a salesman to say "OH YEA! IT COSTS X AMOUNT"
I was helping a buddy buy a car from ********

A seller told him he had the engine/transmission rebuilt, and showed an obviously fake bill of work (like it was clearly edited in photoshop). And it didn't even have a shop name/number/contact info on the paper, and just for giggles we asked for the shop name so we could verify the work. Then he said he couldn't remember where the work was done

90% of salesmen in every industry are scum. It's an extremely low barrier to entry...you need no education. The ones that do well are the ones who are cut throat, cunning, and halfway likeable to sheep. To be successful in sales all you need is the PUA mentality. Most people are weak sheep who can't do math and believe everything they are told, so they will agree to a 400/mo for 84 month car loan and not even think twice. The salesmen aren't even the worst part...the final boss AKA the finance manager is the one you have to watch. They will almost always add a warranty in without your approval and hope you sign without catching it. The last new car i bought and financed (jeep) the guy was trying to sell me an extended warranty on chit i was about to rip off the SUV and modify lmao. Imagine buying a warranty for new tires. Bro if you can't pay for tires in cash you shouldn't even be buying a new car.

I stick to buying used and either working on the vehicles myself or taking them to a trusted mechanic buddy to deal with if i don't have the time. I also have multiple cars so if one is down, it doesn't matter....i'll drive the other car while the one i usually drive is being fixed. I can't understand how people who don't own a business/have the ability to write off expenses are buying 80k dollar pickups and SUV's. Math not even once.

It works both ways. I have friends that have been in car sales their entire careers that will tell stories about customers lying about everything from the history of their trade-in to how much down payment they have, credit score, you name it.

Had a similar experience the only time I've ever tried at a dealership. The dude's manager came out at the end and told me they couldn't sell me the car I wanted because it was already sold and they didn't know, and then told me they had one that was almost the same for 2k more and already had the contract written up LOL. I was "do you think I'm ****ing retarded." Said thanks for your time and left.

My mind was actually blown with how little of an effort those guys put in to trying to make a sale.

Basically if you are going spend 70-100K+ on a car you are treated well/like your not a retard. If you're car shopping with the need/goal to negotiate with salesmen/try to get a good price they think of their customers like plebs.
The difference between the Audi/BMW/MB/Porsche dealership and the Chrysler/Jeep/Ford/Chevy/Honda Dealership is the same thing as the difference between a 4 star and 1 star hotel.

I'm mulling over buying a new Genesis and they appear to have a solid transparent sales process where you order online etc

People make the car shopping thing so complicated. It's not. It's the same rule as dealing with any purchase:don't be desperate

You don't need to play games. If you're willing to walk from a bad deal and move on, you're not going to get played. If you walk in and have to buy this car, from this dealer, tonight.... they have all the leverage.

Pre-covid source: Car sales man can be outhustled by just shopping around. Make sure you have your own bank if you are to buy a car knowing the interest rate you're getting. If you're paying all cash you can hustle the salesman even more by telling them how much you're willing to pay that's reasonable for both sides.

Last vehicle purchased was for wife & I let it be known that it was cash from the start, went back and forth between two dealers for several days speaking to the managers; ended up getting nearly $10k off MSRP

I've heard good things about Mercedes and BMW dealers being less sleazy, but bad things about Lexus dealers.

Depends on the dealer/people. I've had one good experience, at least. Plenty of bad over maintenance stuff. That's why I do my own whenever I can.

I shot an offer to a dealer a few hours away for my last car via email asking if it were negotiable and he said yes. Price was already reasonable, but I saw others online for cheaper. So I show up and drive it. He just asks how much I was thinking. Told him, took him 3 seconds to say yes, handed over the check and I drove off.

I went in for a car yesterday at this dealership and god damn do these guys love using shady pressure tactics.

Tells me this car I wanted to buy is 31 000 CAD so I say that's not too bad given that it was still new. Go for a test drive and discuss payments. Homie tells me 340 CAD every 2 weeks which is 680 CAD every month for 60 months. I would have paid 40 000 CAD which is 9 000 CAD in interest. I was surprised since my credit score is over 700, so I told him I'll come back tomorrow after discussing with my dad. I never showed up.

Even if I gave him 20 000 CAD as a down payment, I was still gonna pay 164 every 2 weeks which is 8 000-9 000 CAD in interest.

What's even funnier is the fact that this guy didn't even tell me what the interest rate was and simply expected me to sign the papers and leave. I was even more shocked that he had to boost the car and he had the balls to tell me that he had another client looking to buy the vehicle. Yeah sure Jeff. These car salesmans are some of the shadiest folks out there. Absolutely no moral compass and will do and say anything in order to sell a car. Even if it means concealing the interest rate and charging an additional 9 000 over 5 years for a car. I'm just gonna go buy a 8 000-15 000 CAD car all cash and avoid the hassle of paying these bums.
