When the soft determinist chooses red 36 on the roulette wheel, his hard determinist buddy says you didn't really choose red 36, it wasn't really your choice. The SD says wtf of course I chose it, there were 36 options and I literally just put my money on that one.
The HD says yes but you only did it because you've always thought red was your lucky colour and 36 was your lucky number.
The SD says yes I know, ever since I was a kid.
The HD says but ultimately that is because of genetic and environmental factors and events outside your control that made you the person you are.
The SD says yeah obviously.
The HD says so you were just acting out your part in a chain of events that started before you and is outside your control.
The SD says yeah no ****, that's how everything works.
The HD says so therefore it wasn't really your choice.
The SD says wtf of course it is my choice. Like you said, it is me acting on the various environmental, genetic and life events that made me the person I am. That's what "my choice" MEANS!
The HD says no that's not what it means, for it to be your choice you would have to be responsible for the whole chain of events that led to you doing it.
The SD says wtf the whole chain of events back to the Big Bang, that makes no sense at all, how could I be responsible for that?
The HD says well unless you are then you are just acting out a predetermined destiny, so you don't really make any choices.
The SD says are you mental, nobody thinks that is what making a choice means. Everybody thinks it means that destiny shaped you into a person who wanted to do something and you made a choice and did it.
Etc

I’m not necessarily knocking your endeavor. It may just be a part of your life's pursuits. Good luck brah, srs.

I can see both sides. My career only took over when I found my years of studying logic to be very applicable to financial and economic modelling. It might have been a straighter line to just study that sort of thing instead. Or maybe there are advantages to coming at it from an outside "meta" viewpoint?I’m not necessarily knocking your endeavor. It may just be a part of your life's pursuits. Good luck brah, srs.

I majored in philosophy and never even encountered terms such as hard determinism and soft determinism. The better way to teach philosophy is a historical approach that goes through the thoughts of the great philosophers of the past. The modern, analytic style of teaching philosophy seems like a pointless parlor game.

more about thought organization, ambition direction, logic, etc. than the actual content. the piece of paper stating you jumped through hoops (and paid money) instead of actually using your u.s. history pre-requisite at your job
also, i dont think soft determinism should be a thing. they should call it something else
neuroplasticity could fall under soft determinism, because its malleable but still under biological constraints (brain, neurons, metabolism, etc.)
