Nothing unless I'm about to enter my home, then walk around so he does not know where I live.

Why this one guy and not the hundreds of strangers I see throughout the day? Am I obligated to greet everyone I walked past on my way home? Do I approach everyone on the subway, greet them and shake their hands and thank them for riding the subway with me? People straight up do not do that here. Not sure why you're having a hard time with this. You can keep trying to make it a me thing, but nobody else does that here.

WTF are you even talking about? LOL

There was no "switching" and none of those things are contradictory. I live in a large city. And like most large cities, there are residential areas where... people live.... in houses and apartments and condos and stuff. This sidewalk was not in front of any house. It was all public property.

What part are you not understanding? Am I going to have to take a picture for you?

Maybe you're scared to talk to people, which is fine....a lot of people are, maybe you touch yourself too much and you lack the self confidence to look another man in the eyes and say hello....maybe you had a rough childhood and you have an aversion to masculine male figures.....I dont know.
Or maybe I just don't feel obligated to greet every stranger I pass on the street like some insane country bumpkin.

You already had all of that information.

There was no going out of my way to avoid anyone. Is there any part of this situation that you actually understand?

Again... why this guy and not all of the other people I passed on my way home that morning? You seem to have it in your head that we are next door neighbors or something. Or that I live in the wilderness and it's just me and him sharing a log cabin. This is just some random guy smoking on the sidewalk. There are other people out at that time. At the time I passed him he would have had no idea we even lived in the same neighborhood.

You never ****ing know about people, man. This dude could have just had a fight w/ his wife and lost his job and had nothing to live for, etc. Could have a gun, could be otherwise insane. You def don’t wanna just comply with that weird baiting intimidation **** he is trying to pull, but you don’t want to totally ignore him, either. Can’t really watch out for yourself if you aren’t paying attention to him. I’d probably say something like, “we don’t want any trouble this morning, have a good day” and keep walking while keeping an eye o him. If he made a move toward a pocket or his belt , you’re obligated to defend yourself with lethal force. Hope you carry.

I think it's likely that he is insane or something is wrong with him. Repeatedly mentioning that he is a brain surgeon and the way he would alternate between de-escalating and then starting to mouth off again whenever I turned my back didn't feel right. There was something very off about him.

I tried 2 or 3 times to end things with "OK, have a good morning" but he'd go off again as soon as my back was turned.

I probably would have just said thanks if he moved out of the way for me.

I had to read that like 3 times to understand what happened lol

I thought he tried blocking you or something.

Would've looked him in the eyes and said "excuse me" as I passed and kept walking because that's what I would have done anyway

Guy is in his 50s, 15-20 years older than you and slightly bigger than you.

What do you do?
Like the other guy said, maybe just a non-challenging chuckle. I may just smile and then keep moving on.

In reality, no fight is worth it. You don't know if he has a knife, or you'll catch a fist, land with the back of your head on cement and become paralyzed, etc.
