The far-right doombears on Zerohedge have referred to this as the end of our "landfill economy", where throwing 2 year old cell phones away creates growth and idling in traffic boosts demand for oil. It's the neoliberal attitude of growth at all costs, resources are infinite, people are widgets, debt is good, and everything is a market to tap.

What's going to happen next is that we will move from a money/debt based growth economy to a resource-limited rationing economy. We're already seeing the limits of the fiat money system now: you can print a trillion fukkin dollars and it won't put one extra drop of water in the Colorado. Or the mess in California, where they are getting rekt by a heat wave and need EVs to counteract more global warming, but they don't have any capacity on their grid to power them. We're just running into some really tough obstacles on continued growth.

The endgame is that governments are going to transition to a digital currency that's basically going to act as a ration card. You want to go to the grocery store and buy 10lbs of chicken? Whoa buddy, your environmental credit score isn't high enough for that chit. Have you considered eating some bugs instead to offset your carbon footprint?

It's pretty fukked up, but we are going to need some kind of alternative to the status quo. The 90-day growth model is clearly falling apart at the seams.

It isn't 'conservationists', it's the simple fact that scientists don't even fully understand the role in climate regulation that the deep seabed has. It's very difficult to even run simulations on deep sea 'mining' (it's a vacuum process that hoovers off the first layer, effectively, and the sediment plumes created will spread (slowly, at that depth) for miles around, clogging the gills etc. of all the species that live there.

In some sense, humanity doubles down on its stupidity in these moments, rather than understanding the simple fact that: even if humanity were to stop (entirely) its harmful behavior as regards the oceans/climate, it would take over 100 years for the planet to even be able to start recovering. For the effects of what is done today to stop in their own impact. Over 100 years.

But human life cycles are so short, and most humans are far too short sighted. The end of abundance isn't new - it was already referred to in Fukuyama's The End of History and the Last Man.

So even if we agree and accept the end of abundance, the question is then: how do we proceed? What sort of policies can be adopted to really achieve the SDGs, if their full implementation is even possible? We celebrate no more plastic straws, yet still get our drinks in a plastic cup with a plastic lid.
