Since so many people steal from self checkout walmart has been recording people and there is a machine learning program they use to go through all the footage and it puts out an alert for actual humans to review the footage it thinks it saw you making a suspicious movement and they get your info and send the cops to arrest you srs. And good luck convincing some boomer judge it was an accident you didnt scan something. I fukin hate this country

America is always so far behind lol. Over here you can use an app to scan your products bar codes while you’re shopping. Then when you get to the exit you have the machine scan your phone’s account. And boom, everything’s there, everything’s already packed, just have to pay.

If you have a full cart you shouldn’t be able to self checkout unless you can provide 3 reference and a notarized audit visibly and clearly displaying your checkout speed.

Always amazes me that supermarket workers encourage you to use self-service checkout. They are basically encouraging people to put them out of work, because that is the entire point of them-to let these corporate giants sack as many people as possible.

One Sainsbury's here years back decided it would go entirely self-checkouts, but lost so much money in just three months with people going to competitors to be served by & talk to a human that they have now had to go back to the old way.

I don't care about self-checkouts but I hate the fact that a lot of stores are now forcing you to buy reusable bags instead of providing plastic ones. That is super annoying.

Over here they call them bags for life, but they look like they would last a month or two at best. Always used canvas/heavy cotton Tote Bags-they last for about 5-6 years.

The reason I walked out last time was because the last time I tried to use one of those stupid machines it somehow scanned an item like 25 times as I passed it over(Ded fkn Srs)

It took a solid 5-7 minutes for the employee to notice & correct while I stood there, we had to manually delete each item entry

If you go to Sam's Club you just scan everything on your app and walk out the door. The only person you have to interact with is the person at the exist who scans 3 random items in your cart.

If it's dealing with less people, its definitely the way.

This is true. Sad how many people don't seem to be able to competently operate such a simple machine. And some of them work for the store.

Yes OP, this is becoming the norm and it sucks for employment.

There used to be 2 discount grocers in DFW where the story was you had to bag your own groceries and take them out to your car yourself but because of that they could charge lower prices vs. Other store that had baggers who would bag your groceries and take it out to the car for you and load it into your vehicle then return the shopping cart to the store. It was a good first job, usually boys between 16 and 18 plus a few retired guys and disabled/mentally challenged people.

I believe that when Walmart went big into the grocery business that is what ended it. Walmart didn't offer that level of service and over time fewer regular grocers offered it. I think locally that Tom Thumb/Randall's was the last holdout. They still had a few Courtesy Clerks back in 2012.

The absolute worst will never never shop again experience I had with this recently was a new Walmart Market concept that they have rolled out.

All of the customers in the store have to join one long line to wait for an open self-checkout station. Said stations are supervised by about a half dozen employees mostly just standing there watching customers do all the work. BRB waiting nearly a half hour to purchase three small items because you are in line behind people with full carts.

Self checkout is better due to less interaction with subhuman store employees.

Larger orders, such as weekly groceries, order on app, let peasant load back of suv, drive away without making eye contact.

My grocery stores have scales so once you scan the item you have to place it on the scale. The weight of the item has to match whats on the scale or else the machine gives you an error. Thought this was the same everywhere

It's fine when you have a few things, but it's extremely annoying when you have a cart full of groceries.

Brb having to look up all of the fruits and vegetables myself, then bag 100 things while the machine freezes because it thinks I didn't scan something properly

Yeah, self-checkout is basically the norm now anytime a business can possibly get away with. Most retail workers did a great job of changing the minds of people like me who were pretty anti self-checkout for the first decade or so they were a thing by having chitty attitudes/lack of competence. As annoying as I think self-checkouts are for most situations, I'd usually rather deal with the bs of self-checkouts than deal with some cashier with a salty attitude or who doesn't make the checkout experience any smoother than just doing it all yourself at a self-checkout. As if they don't even realize they are putting the very existence of their positions on the line with that bs.

I don't have those feels. People looking at me with a "face" like I should go faster will not motivate me to rush. Same thing with parking lots. I start my car and let it warm up for a time. I shop low volume because veggies and living single. I don't get more than I can eat before things spoil. Also, I usually get Scotch while at it. I go through the human checkout isle more often than the self check out.

Did you guys know that to keep Mung Bean Sprouts from spoiling so fast that you put it in a container and rinse out with water a few times, then put a bit (1-3 table spoons) of vinegar, fill it up with water and mix it up. @ 4 days later, drain and just refill with water, no further vinegar needed. Just drain refill water every 4-7 days.

This is how i justify it too lol. If you're too tight to hire human workers to do things properly, I'm too tight to scan items honestly. We both benefit from the situation.

If I have a full cart of groceries, I will used one of the lanes with a human cashier because I don't feel like bagging all that **** myself. If it's a small cart, or only a few items, I will use the self checkout.

There is chain of convenience stores that is popular in my city and it's almost all self checkout now. I went one day and literally all of the self checkout lanes were flashing the red employee assistance needed and there were no employees doing anything to try and clear the errors. About half the people just said **** it and walked out with unpaid items.

Only time it sucks is when someone has a full cart and is trying horribly to organize it all. Pretty sure these are the new 20 items or less lines, not a full month's supply of groceries line.
