You only need 2 sets of tires If you have a sports car or something that needs grippy summer tires. Otherwise just get all season and call it a day.

You don't need 2 sets of tires.

City's and gov'ts are familiar with the weather conditions in the area and usually very prepared with plenty of city plows and sub-contracts to whoever wants to throw a plow on their pick-up truck and help out. Rarely is there a situation you would be stuck unless the Snowpocolypse was coming. But even then crews do a great job with salting and plowing the roads and there is usually an overabundance of plows which is a good thing. Main roads and highways are good and if you're lucky you can follow the convoy. Sometimes its the side roads like in neighborhoods that usually get plowed last.

Just as people in Florida are used to dealing with Hurricanes, people in the north are used to dealing with snow storms.

There is nothing to worry about. Just don't drive like an Ahole and you'll be fine.

Edit: Always have a snowbrush handy and if it makes you feel better, you can keep a shovel in your trunk.

That. If it is a concern then get a place not to far from a state maintained road. At least in MI many major roads were maintained by the state, smaller local roads maintained by the city/town, and residential streets are plowed at the expense of the HOA or not at all. Our development did not have an HOA so no snow plow service. There were only a couple of times that it was much of a problem though. Usually you just had to crawl until you could get to a city/state road that had plow service and then it was no big deal.

All the dads from my town rode the snowmobiles right down the center of the highway to school, picked us up and drove home.

It was about a 20 mile ride lol.

That's impressive. After about 6 years in SE MI I've seen some snow.

If you are just planning to throw a dart and have no real connection to the area then Indiana is less expensive and the area around Fort Wayne seems affordable/not too bad. Since you mentioned people in your post re:FL I found the people in MI to be overall very decent and mostly polite. There are some jerks everywhere.

Otherwise I've thought about TN and NC if I leave TX. Seasonality without super long winters. Not too crazy expensive. Looks like good options for outdoor activities and gardening. Could make a long weekend trip to the beach if you want.
