I agree it was sad, and i'm not a fan of him, but really this settlement is absolutely insane. You can't sue people for 1 billion for being nasty and saying mean things in a supposedly 'free' country, i get they should be able to sue him, but how exactly is such a ridiculous sum calculated? He said mean things, and caused distress, but that's ultimately all he did. He didn't rape or murder anyone. This is an extremely dangerous precedent to set.

If he deserves to have his entire life and earning potential ruined forever for this, then what does the government deserve for their actions in the past few years? Or the media outlets and journalists?

My immediate thought as well. It's normal today to get one "clown world" ruling, but two in a row by loony judges isn't likely. At the every least it'll be knocked down to a realistic number.
I recall Al Sharpton was ordered to pay several million over defamation for the Tawana Brawley false claim....and he just never did. Alex might do the same, just refuse to pay. It is civil court in Connecticut - he could simply refuse to enter Connecticut again, right?

He still has a 3rd trial where judgements are going to be issued.
