Ken-O says it pretty well in the OP. Listen to your gut/body.

Man, that sucks. It doesn’t sound like a complete tear either. Ever got a diagnosis or you just went commando?

——How to get a pec tear fixed —-

Making this for bros reading this now or in the future

Went through this a couple years ago.

Got an MRI and first doc says it can’t be surgically fixed because it tore from the muscle and not the tendon from the bone.

Well that’s bullchit and I had an incompetent doctor.

Did some research and found Dr. Matthew Stiebel out of west palm beach Florida. Palm Beach Sports Medicine

He is a normal Ortho surgeon but is world rebound for fixing pec tears. He learned under a doctor in Boston who created a special suture weave that can repair any pec tear. No matter how it tore. And even if the tear is a few years old.

When I got mine fixed 4 years ago he had already done over 200 of them.

He’s done so many and has so many people come to him that he has a special discounted flat rate price if you are out of his insurance and need to pay out of pocket.

Even if you’re out of state. Call his office up. You’ll talk to Kirsten, his medical assistant. And she will take care of you. All you need to do is send a few pics and the MRI report and that’s all he needs to tell you the next steps.

If you’re out of state. You get an Airbnb, surgery on Monday. Relax for a week, follow up appointment on Friday and then you fly home that weekend.

I’m telling you. Nothing hurts more than a doc saying you can’t be fixed and gonna have to deal with deformity or strength loss. People who say it can’t be fixed are liars and bad docs. See dr. Stiebel. He’s an absolute unit.

I think a good indicator is if strength is going up unusually fast, as in you have been benching 225 for years and suddenly you find yourself adding 5 pounds every week , maybe because a change in routine, sleep, supps, oj etc.

Muscle can adapt faster than tendon. So you may be lifting a weight that your tendons aren’t ready for. So I’d say keep yourself to 90% for at least a month even if you feel super strong and like you can push more.

For example:

I benched 295 x 6 last Wednesday. That on itself was a pr. The Saturday before that I had benched 315 x 2, almost 3. Another PR as well.

Should have kicked it back to second gear after the 315 lift. After a PR, to keep pushing yourself to a 100% with low rep sets, with hindsight I can see it was pretty damn idiotic.

Since 2005 all of the pec tears that i read about here are on the barbell flat bench press; time to delete that exercise.

At least you’ve got money, Ken. Anyone else down in Mexico would have to go to the chit clinic and wouldn’t even have surgery, MRI, etc be an option.

For those unaware, if you don’t have the cash up front for treatment, you don’t get the treatment in Mexico.

Yeah this is what I’m thinking. First doctor says no surgery needed, not sure I buy that. A partial tendon tear is still pretty damn bad to just let it heal on its own. At 31 years old I’m not sure I want to be already dealing with little shoulder/chest issues for the rest of my life

Fuk, this terrifies me and I legit think about it every other bench session now that I'm a little older, especially when I feel minor soreness/stiffness from a prior session.

Do you mind telling me what your 1RM is and what you usually train at, etc.?

At my strongest I benched 405 and could get 365 for 4-5 reps if I remember right, nowadays I just do 3 sets of 315 for 5 or slightly less, trying not to push TOO hard, and then do a drop set.

I'd imagine that if at one point a year+ ago I was able to do 405 and now I am only doing 315s, even though I'm a little less muscular/strong (weigh about 15lbs less), the tendons have probably been built up over time that I'm not at too high of a risk of a tear?

Edit: Right now I can probably only get 365 for 2. No brag, just trying to give context.

I think when we're feeling strong/healthy we want to keep going. Push too fast because it's exciting at that moment and bad things can happen.

You're young and healthy so fingers crossed you bounce back and make a full recovery.

That video was the first thing that came to my mind lol. Played it cool with my spotter and told him I felt something off and I was ending it there (pretty sure he heard my freaking tendons ripping off lol but he said nothing)

Went immediately to the bathroom to see if my pec wasn’t completely out of place.

Haven’t done 1rm in over a year but I did 315 x 2 last Wednesday, almost 3. So 1rm is probably around 330.

Or at least it was, don’t think I’m gonna get close to that in a while lol.

To avoid that I’d say simply don’t do bench press with low rep sets. I was doing a 5-6 rep set and it tore, so hard to tell for sure how to avoid it while still doing bench press.

My right pec was the one bothering me a bit on the last couple of chest days, yet the one that tore was the left. Who knows man. One thing I’m sure of tho, is that I’m never pressing heavy without an spotter, even if I’m confident I can get 4+ reps by myself.

Fook, hate reading this. Benching heavy is what keeps me coming back/what I enjoy the most - it's fun to me, but I know I should probably stop sooner or later.

Usually do it twice a week. Have always had a good bench too which helps make it fun. Got 405 at 196lbs

Do you always use this rep set when benching?

I don't lift as heavy as the boys but I've lifted heavy for a female. Even though I bb I've always switched up between hypertrophy and power lifting programs. It's been over 35 yrs and I've never had an injury or joint/tendon issues and I bb bench on the regular.

Going to steal his thunder and reply and saying that I do. I have always BB benched 3 sets of 5 reps for literally 10 years, twice a week. Thankfully no upper body injuries yet. I've always warmed up with a few sets of lighter weight prior to working sets and I'm sure that has helped me. E.g. when I could bench 275 for 5 it was 135x5, 185x5, 225x5, 275x5x3 or something like that.

What was the stretching routine like for your chest beforehand(assuming you did)? Just curious,

the weight itself has a more impact on it than the stretch of course

Years ago I was going too heavy on decline for too long and tore my bicep stretching one night after chest, i remember the paper sound and wondered if it was just in my head till i realised what happened.

It looks even better than before now and has a slightly better peak

Sorry to hear it. I guess this is one perk of having an extremely weak bench… I’ll never reach a weight that I’m likely to injure myself.
