It can’t be just UK pension funds that were hiding this weakness. US pension funds are prob doing the same thing and are equally vulnerable to collapse over Treasury yields.

From what I understand these pension funds hold government bonds to fund their pension payouts. But instead of just holding the bonds they are leveraging them as collateral for cash loans. This works fine as long as government bond prices are rising like during the past decade plus of QE. But now that government bond prices are dropping the bonds collateral is worth less so the funds faced margin calls that they either can’t meet or have to sell other assets for which collapses prices of those assets with potential for catastrophic contagion across markets.

Jamie Dimon even said the UK pension funds fiasco caught him by surprise because he didn’t know they were so leveraged on bonds so it was like a hidden vulnerability. Exactly like MBS were back in 2008.
It's not close to MBS in 2008, as the UK Bond market is nowhere close to the US mortgage market. But it just reveals how weak the UK really is. They're like an expensive prostitute who is wearing expensive clothes and jewelry, but sleeping at a $10 per night flop house with cockroaches.

-Tory backbench MPs (Ian Brady and the 1922 committee especially) got a taste of power under May.
-Boris then won and had covid to deal with.
-Once covid died down, MPs conspired to remove Boris and replace him with Sunak
-The party membership chose Truss instead of Sunak.
-MPs conspired to make an already crap Truss look even worse (Gove being once of the ringleaders) so that they could replace her with Sunak.
-They are now trying to avoid the members getting a vote and just install Sunak, because the members would pick Boris.

The only dangerous thing about an exercise is the person doing it.

sunak is just another neolib cameron clone but at least he understands the basics of economics. if the tories want to limp onwards he is their best bet
