I thought so too but after rewatching it probably not, he wasn't even looking at the end.

Great fight overall, Izzy mixed it up which was interesting to see. I kind of expected the clinches but didn't expect the takedown.

Agreed, great fight. I was hyped when izzy got his back and thought he'd choke Poatan out but for some reason even at purple belt, you can see mistakes being made. Strangely enough, some purple/brown belts are absolute savages on the ground but other black belts are completely useless. Then again, belts are mostly handed out for GI fighters as I learned so you can have mighty mouse rocking the blue when he is clearly black (no pun intended)

maybe slightly early, as far as a championship fight is concerned. would maybe have liked to see it go on a bit longer but in all likelihood we would have seen Adesanya knocked out cold on the canvas. As much as I wanted to see that, it wasn't the worst stoppage ever and I don't think it's some huge what if or conspiracy. Dude was not intelligently defending himself.

not quite leon edwards vs kamaru but the fight was getting away from Alex. Competitive first 2 rounds. got rekt in the 3rd. 4th round he lost. Even with a 10-8 round in the 5th for Alex, the best he could have hoped for if the fight wasn't stopped was for a draw. But you could argue a 10-8 for the 3rd for Adesanya, and even Adesanya winning both of the first 2 rounds.

Adesanya was clearly the better fighter for 80% of the fight. But I also think Alex was conserving energy because he never fought a 5 rounder and decided to throw things more powerfully and be more aggressive in the last round bc he knew he probably lose a decision if he didn't and you might as well just let it all out. It almost mirrors their previous fights lul..

However, for a lot of that fight it was Adesanya being backed up against the cage and Alex assuming the dominant position/octagon control. You could say it was a matter of time before Adesanya got caught backing up against the cage like that. I didn't like that for him although he was outstriking Alex for the majority of the fight.

*******sanya is just an inferior fighter to this guy.

Too tough, too strong, too much power. He doesn't get hypnotized by *******sanyas running around.

*******sanyas genderbender style only works on short slow guys.

This actually made me rage so much. Often when Izzy was backed up against the cage he would just stand there instead of instantly circling out. Exactly my thoughts like you said that it was just a matter of time until he caught those granite hands. Looks like it was the peroneal nerve that stopped him from circling out instantly and had him just stand there waiting to get sniped.

I bet he is raging at just standing in front of someone with dynamite fists for that long after rewatching the fight as well.

inferior fighter?

lets see Alex defend his belt first against those 'short slow guys'.

Interestingly enough it wasn't a difference of power that won the fight but durability. Izzy rocked him in rd1

I could see somebody like a Vettori wrestle-phuck him for 5 rounds straight, or Whittaker out-pointing him. But Whittaker seems a bit more chinny nowadays. What made Adesanya successful as well was his takedown defense. A good wrestler who can take him down will gas him out easily.

but more likely is a rematch.

That's slow motion.

I don't think it was one of the worst stoppage ever, but I think as the Champ you have to give him the benefit of the doubt. Plus, in MMA how many times we see fighters come out of adversity and win a fight...

I'm fine with the stoppage but I'm also fine with the viewpoint that he could've let it go on for 1-3 more punches (or a knee) until Adesanya dropped again.

The stoppage was perfectly fine. Izzy wasn't defending himself and looking straight at the ground with his hands down. Can't do that and expect the ref to keep the fight going. It's crazy that Alex is the champ now. He looked absolutely terrible on the ground. He would get demolished by anyone who can wrestle even a little bit. My guess is that Izzy gets a rematch before anyone else gets a shot. His matches are boring as hell but it feels like he's been the champ forever

It was a good stoppage. Pereira would have unleashed a barrage on him if not stopped.

Firas Zahabi was saying he has one of the most elite scissor knees in the game and would have pulped Izzys face with the next sequence, and Im inclined to agree.

Obviously he does but timing is everything. Pereira will not hang around at MW after the Izzy fight, especially if Glover loses to Jiri again.

I feel harsh even saying this because what he did was amazing but it's true, Pereira probably loses to Izzy in the rematch, Vettori, Whitakker, and Costa. There are just so many bad match ups for him at MW. He could also drop a bomb on any of those guys at any time, but he would definitely be the betting underdog in every fight.

well you're not wrong OP, Izzy did, and under normal circumstances he has 2 wins

But Pereira escaped out of jail again, this time via the bell, and hangs in there long enough to eventually land and get a finish.

Izzy is still the better fighter, he's favored in the rematch and has more ways to win.

If the fights go exactly the same, with Izzy striking first again (like he has last 2 times) then its highly unlikely Alex gets another standing 8 count or gets saved by bell. Then Izzy wins
And if nothing happens and it goes to decision then Izzy likely also wins.

Imagine he goes to LHW after Jiri wins again and takes the belt from him lol. 6 fights 2 belts. Mayhem would ensue.

It's insane how izzy was winning this fight with a smart game plan but I guess the leg kicks were the real smart game plan. I heard Izzy was also winning in the second kickboxing fight before the left hook came.
