I had an extraordinarily violent childhood. Both parents. As a result, I made it a life goal to raise my kids without any hitting at all. They are adults now and have never been hit by their parents. Both are in college now and we have great relationships. They are respectful and hard working.

It can be done.

I don't think it's necessary to discipline kids. I smacked my sons diapered bottom once in his life. Decided I didn't need to and found other ways to discipline. Time outs, taking favorite toys away, etc. Just because you don't hit your kids doesn't mean you're letting them run wild doing anything they want.

ETA: It breaks my heart reading about those of you who were abused.I can't even fathom hurting an innocent child.
