My parents always have window open, grandparents, wives parents. Several coworkers. Ask any Norwegian and they will tell you its normal to sleep with window open during winter.

We dont use ovens in every room when its slightly cold & AC when its slightly warm. Thats AMERICAN culture.
Expectations definitely figure into this.

Maintaining balanced humidity is worthwhile. And it is true that you adapt if you are younger and healthy. Too many older people have told me they can't deal with cold to not believe them.

I've been locking stuff up here. Had windows open a lot in MI because I could. Super nice when days are warm and nights are cooler. Or even during the day weather permitting.

Maybe I'm a bit of a fatalist 'cause I tend to think if someone really wants to come in then they are going to unless you have some serious Fort Knox kind of build. Not saying you should make it super easy, but I worry more about getting out than about someone else getting in.

It would suck to have things stolen. Still I'm more about putting distance between me and anyone out to do physical harm.

I live on the 3rd floor so I can if I wanted to, but literally everytime I do I get insects/critters in my room, even with a mesh screen. they just find a way in. If not moths at night its gnats or flies during the day or spiders/earwigs. Its super annoying to be sitting at the computer and see some monstrosity of a spider the size of a silver dollar crawl from the backside of my desk. I'm in San Diego now, and we actually have trantulas here. They come from Mexico. I've yet to see one, and if I do I don't want it to be in my apartment chillin' in the kitchen or in the bathtub or some chit, lol.

I have screens on all my windows. Also, my front door is behind a courtyard. I'm thinking it's about as easy to cut through a screen as it is to break through a window. But I don't live in the ghetto and don't have metal bars over all my windows.

LOL if you think having all windows closed means a thug can't get in. Better get some metal bars for your windows OP, that glass isn't going to stop sht.
