Been hustling for work since I was 23 and went into business for myself. Never looked back and never had a 'job'. I will clean toilets for a living if that is what I need to do. My goals in life are no longer to maximize wealth. Since 2010, I have steered my path towards less is more. I (try) to live a no compromise life. Putting each day first and not get caught chasing anything. Always putting my time and my time with my family FIRST. Designing has been perfect as I have not worked outside my home for the past 12 years.

It's 930 on a monday. I just got up and having my first cup of coffee. My daughter is home from college. My dog is sitting next to me, and I will do some work at some point. I no longer chase MOAR. Having nice things is great, but not the source of happiness in life. Having a wife who is the most incredible woman ever, and having kids that still want me in their lives even as they become young adults is the best success that I can think of.

You are no doubt, correct that I am just 'some guy'. Not wasting my life ever on chasing being 'someone'. I am me, and happy to be that!
Being wealthy and under the radar is the most ideal situation, especially if you have assets. Publicity opens you up to unwanted attention, harassment and risk for theft or lawsuits. You're doing it right. Plus you probably get more quality clients from referrals or word of mouth.

I learned a great lesson 13 years ago. Money does NOT buy happiness. I have shared the story many times, but I will briefly. I enjoyed decent success early in life. College drop out. Parents were not wealthy. (Dad was an electrician and my mom was a mom) Was self-made millionaire in my mid-20 and I was obsessed with achieving more and more in life. I never enjoyed any of it really. I was just so driven that it never dawned on me to enjoy life. No achievement was ever good enough and each day was about trying to do better.

Life dealt me a great lesson. One that I needed. Having the economy crash 08-09, shutting down 2 businesses AND almost getting killed in a accident faced me to evaluate my life in my mid-30's. I broke my neck and suffered a TBI which caused short term memory loss. Took me a year to recover, although I will never be the same mentally. TBI has changed (lessened my abilities to process at the level I once did). I have (had) very high IQ and process at a good level. Self taught compulsive learner my entire life.

Anyway, I learned that I always had everything in life that I wanted to be happy. I just never appreciated it. That is my wife and kids. I took them for granted. I never took the time to be 'present'. I saw that nothing I ever bought made me happy. Even owing 3 helicopters at one time and 'commuting' out of my back yard was not something I appreciated. I just took for granted that I should be doing all those things and was focused on what is next.

So I swore off all things material. I sold most of everything. Sold the 10,000 sqft home and moved in a small neighborhood where our kids (3 and 5 at the time) could live a 'normal' life. It was great. I went from driving a G-Wagen (one of the first 200 in the us) to driving a Nissan Mini-van. I put my kids on the bus every day and was there at the stop sign to get the off when the day was over. I took 3 years off of any work and found true happiness. NONE of it came from stuff.

As time has gone on, I have allowed myself to enjoy some of the fruits of my labor. I have had a few lambos (which I would only buy after my wife convinced me to do for myself). I built our family another home. But I always make sure I dont loose focus of what is important.

I am putting my efforts in things that we can enjoy as a family. I just took a 16 hour round trip to pick up my son's Christmas gift. I bought him his own race car. When he finally turns 16 we will be able to travel to more car events and he will need his own track car. I got him out on track starting at 14. It has been an awesome journey. This new car is a PERFECT thing for us. Totally track dedicated. (not street legal). Has sequential transmission...etc. Kind of a crazy thing to buy for your kid, but it is about the experiences this will bring us and the times we will share. We are already planning our attack to be ready for the new track season in spring!

I dont feel I have all that much and I live what I consider very conservatively. I feel lucky to get to share these moments with my family and that to me is the most important thing.

We are all just 'some guy', doesn't matter how outwardly successful you are (100% srs), if you understand that it means you are a truly conscious human

btw OP I had a similar experience, bad car accident + TBI forced me to slow down, give up my career ambitions of working 60+ hours per week, ended up finding God and finding the way (srs). Those types of events happen to us for a reason brah

Wish I had understood that sooner! Much of what we are conditioned to desire goes against the nature of finding happiness. Just finding the ability to be in the present is a HUGE step to understanding what brings fulfilment. I am lucky in many ways to have figured this out, albeit the hard way

If BB.com is still around

This is one that is being built now that I did. Owner is 'famous' in the NASCAR world. Cool home limited by a narrow site. I enjoy being the guy who no one knows that will leave behind a bunch of stuff that people live in and never think about me, yet I have touched their lives in some way.

Glad you survived that. My accident did not give me any spiritual revelations, but it did affect me deeply in other ways. I found a love for all people and an appreciation for people who are different than me whereas before, I was critical of others. I learned to embrace what is different, and stop judging. (or at least try to accept people as they come to me). I survived an accident that was almost impossible to survive. I dragged a guys dead body out of the wreckage who was 1/2 decapitated just inches from me. At the time of trauma, you are not in your right mind. I got to experience first hand just how fragile life is. I have never had a 'bad' day since my accident. There are some that just are not as GREAT as others.

Eye opening and truly a gift for me. I look at it still as one of the best days of my life. I would not take it back ever.

Dont get me wrong, nice stuff is nice, but it does not bring true fulfilment. Lots of rich lonely people trying to buy distractions from their deep pit of unhappiness they live within. I have found that I feel most happy giving up caring about what makes me happy, and living for others. Specifically to be there in support of the ones I love. I feel pretty unimportant overall and I am happy with that. I am turning 50 in a few months.

The one thing I do take a lot of pride in is the 25 years I have spent in the gym. It is mine and for me. Many misc warriors will throw rocks and shout 'juicy'. (no longer lifetime natty, but had almost 20 years of training before turning in my natty card). But you simply dont hold a quality physique AND maintain good health by abusing drugs. It might work in the short term, but it will catch up with you in the end. Like many other things, life is all about balance.

I see.

My family home growing up was in the middle of the wilderness and we were extremely security conscious.

Being isolated and appearing to have money always seemed dangerous when growing up.

I would not feel comfortable in a room where reflections from lights inside mean I cannot see who or what is outside at night.

This home will be about 60 for design. About 10k of that is for structural engineering, so the design itself will be about 50k. Architects can 'seal' their own designs for structure. But when you are just a 'designer' you subcontract out the structural design to a licensed PE. I know enough about structure to do it myself, but I lack any credentials. So I just draw the 's' pages and have the engineer add his notes and then incorporate into final plans.

He is on a beautiful lake lot at the end. He has almost 3/4 mile lake views out he back of the home to the other side of the shore in that area. The home on the property is getting knocked down. The home to the right just sold 2 years ago for 7 mil. Nice area for sure, but this will be the 'nicest' one in my opinion. Not many modern designs in our area.

Yes its a huge part of collective illusion, and is a known phenomenon. Sometimes we chase chit just because its what we're supposed to do, so we get competitive about it. Its easy to obscure what makes us happy, especially when large stacks of cash does a pretty fukking good job making it easier to find happiness.

That's cheap, or it would be in the UK anyway. For an architect to submit and signoff drawings, it's at least 1.5% of the build cost.

For a full D&B contract it gets crazy expensive, but signed off drawings start at 1.5% and can easily be double that with a well known architect.

Yes, similar in the US. For more 'upscale' project, architects are 1-3% of project costs. I have slowly built a reputation over the years. But I am mostly unknown outside certain circles. Many people in my local are, know my homes, but they have no idea who designed them. My own home is one everyone knows. Whenever I tell anyone where I live, I always get "I know that home" response. Just kind of stands out as a little different. I am happy with that.

I am happy to do design as it is something I love. I love creating. My main source of income is real estate investments. Design work is just something I can do that I love and get paid for it. Hard to beat that as I might do it for free. I enjoy working and creating. Mostly I love solving problems and finding solutions. Not all my stuff is this high end. But I enjoy most every project. It is not lost upon me that I am lucky to live in a place where I have been free to find my own path.

Not sure any one single degree or area of study would have satisfied me. But I could have seen myself being many things in life. But I will never have 'initials' validating an accomplishment. Except for many that I also got a commercial helicopter rating and still hold my Flight Instructor certificate. That is as 'professional' as I get

That is kind to say, but I dont think that is true. But I do have some hopes that some can learn from what were hard lessons in my life. I like being able to help others. It is something that brings me happiness. I did not have a positive male role model in my life. My dad, well he is not the greatest dad and an even worse husband. I have not had a relationship with him in almost 20 years. One of the hardest things I have ever had to deal with and it never gets easier.

In my real life, I mentor a few younger guys. Not anything formal, but I appreciate and love that I can help others. I wish someone had been around to give me advice on being a better husband or a better father. I could have used that. My wife stayed with me, even though I was not there for her in the first 7-8 years of our marriage. I was giving her what I thought I was supposed to and in truth, my wife was not wanting any of the things I was chasing. She just wanted someone to go though life with and I was never in the present (mentally). I was physically there, but not there were it really mattered.

"Successful" can mean many things. I am happy that I figured out what has become the most important to me. Regret is a terrible thing. I am glad that the last 13 years of my life have been free from it.

If anyone can derive any wisdom from my past failings, or successes, then that feels really good to be a part of affecting change. I believe in the energy of life. That what you give off and you take in. Be a positive force in the world. It always pays and in ways you cant see initially. I still cant get over what a great place the world is and how amazing the way things come together at times. Life is nothing if not unpredictable. It wonderful.

Why would you want zero privacy like that?

Are they shatter and bulletproof?

Whatever the game plan if crazy people come up to your house and you're just sitting there with them staring at you?
I get this and agree. Need that Will Smith Legion glass.

He's cool, went to college with him. Just extremely driven. That's kind of how success works.

As for the design, I hate the flat roofs. Can't you you tilt them at an unusual angle into a garden? Maybe with that red curved adobe tile? Looks kind of square and blocky for that kind of money.
Don't put that on me Ricky Bobby, don't you ever put that on me.

They aren't made with typical window glass when they are that size. You can make them with all sorts of laminates that do cool stuff. As well as making them impact resistant and UV protective, you can even make them turn opaque by applying an electric current. You flick a switch and it changes from window to wall.

Oddly enough, floor to ceiling windows are really nice when there is snow.
