You need a good story on why you didn't work. Tell the truth. Maybe you were depressed, maybe you had family issues. Be genuine. People will see through the lie.

If you don't have a good story, you need to take any job and start working then apply while working. Certification as others mentioned would be good too. Show people you're a worker and not a bum who did nothing for 7 years.

just lie what do you have to lose? even if they figure it out and dont hire you, then you are at the same spot you are now with nothing but if you sail through then you got it.

Once you get a job then stay there for maybe a year and then get a different one so then at your next one you didnt lie, you will have the previous job as a real one so it will be harder for them to realize you lied about the time before that. But if you stay at the first job for a long time, any time they figure out you lied then you are toast.

Just apply to like Walmart or Mcdonalds, someplace with high turnover that hires anybody who walks through the door. Do that for a few months and then while you're still employed apply for something better. Or just lie. If you get caught you get caught, but maybe you won't. If you're a decent employee they might not even care.

lol you act like op is gonna get some prestigious job, it's probably gonna be a low skill IT job and labour job for now. They really don't care if you lie if you're decent at the job, chances are they will never find out anyway, you just gotta get pass the HR kunts to get in

The likelihood of them checking the exact dates you were employed are low so extend the times worked around the time off.

Do you know anyone who owns their own business? Ask them if you could say you work with them during that period.

What you have to lose with the lie, is the job. People with work gaps get hired, people who lie to interviewers don't. And the lies get remembered. Tell the truth.

I've hired hundreds of people, i've hired multiple people with work gaps, 0 who i thought were lying. I'm sure I missed some lies.

Being currently employed goes a long way to helping people overlook a work gap.

Tell them you went the free lancing route but found the constant stress of searching for the next gig to not be worth it. Also make up a few stories of customers fighting over price/job "done"

also its about to get way harder this year. All the experienced people are getting laid off and will compete for entry level jobs, employers will be able to fill entry level IT with guys with stacked experience levels.

I don't work in IT, but it is STEM. I can't speak to IT though. I'd hire someone with a work gap as long as they had a good reason and were currently employed. I've done it before and it worked out.

You know, I agree with you. If OP isn't going to work and try to just go straight into a good gig, it probably is better chances if they lie. Because not currently working and with the huge gap you have no chance. I agree with you. I'm looking at it as if OP is showing effort in the work force already. In which case I'd suggest telling the truth.

Another nuance is if you have a good story or not. If you have a legitimate reason why you weren't working for 7 years, then telling the truth is much more likely to succeed. If you were literally just playing video games, and not currently working now, you're going to have a bad time.

In either case, you need to be working now to show effort/ethic.

No one cares about gaps, short gigs, or the like in your resume. They really really do not. What they don't want to see is a pattern of leaving after 3-6 months. So yes if you job hop four times in one year many people will question your commitment. Less than that, not so much in my experience.
