I'm a DeSantis over Trump guy myself, but Trump had literally nothing to do with covid vaccine mandates. He bad been out of office for half a year or more before Biden and the Dems started pushing vaccine mandates, and he consistently advocated against mandates.

He also famously (or infamously, to turbo liberal maskcels) opposed masks and mask mandates the entire time he was President during covid (and after he left office). He was opposed to lockdowns other than the first month during April too, but he let the states handle that on their own afterwards. Can you imagine how hard leftists would have been screeching "omg he's HITLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!" if Trump had tried imposing restrictions that banned states from issuing their own state lockdowns?

I think Trump did a good job on the vaccines. He could have been better on masking and chosen his rhetoric more carefully to prevent a lot of the hysteria, but he was right to recommend people take vaccines.

When covid started, 99%+ of the country didn't even know who the fukkk Fauci was, we were 8 months away from the 2020 presidential election, Fauci had hit the peak of his popularity between then and the election, and Trump firing him would have 100% guaranteed a Biden win. Trump also would have gotten destroyed if he had taken the authoritarian approach to refusing to allow states to lock down if their governors wanted to.

You're making a lot of assumptions about how DeSantis would have handled things differently. In 2020, DeSantis was cool, but still a total political newb. There's no way to know for sure that he would been as much of a Big Balls McGee had he been president instead of governor of Florida at the time. I think he would handle it better on the national stage now that he's actually gotten a full term of serving as governor under his belt.

Plus, again, Trump was in an election year. DeSantis was not, and his actions in Florida weren't nearly as popular in spring/summer of 2020 as they are in hindsight today (for most people, I always agreed with the DeSantis approach to covid), which gave him a lot more flexibility to do things how he personally wanted to. Because he knew he had time to make what he did gain popularity among the Florida voters, which is exactly how it all happened.

Lastly, and again - Trump never once suggested imposing vaccine mandates. He was publically against mandates of all kinds from day 1. There is actually a good arguement to be made that he would have been overstepping his constitutional authority to try trumping (no pun intended) the decisions of lockdown governors, as inconvenient as that is to say.

I like how there's a shortage NOW.... How would that even be possible? Most people stopped getting boosted after their 3rd jab, and there was plenty to go around back then.

Fauci served in his role under 5 presidents - Reagon, Bush 41, Slick Willie, Bush 43, Obama, and then Trump. Trump canning his asssss right before the election would have been a guaranteed loss for Trump. Additionally, "The Fauc" acted far more reasonable and less kooky in the early months of the pandemic. By the time Fauc started started acting like a total nut case publically, we still didn't know a whole ton about covid, had minimal treatment ideas available, and we were less than half a year away from election day 2020. Trump firing him would have just lost him votes, plus many people were just sick of Trump canning people all the time. If you don't think PR matters are relevant in politics, then I don't know what to tell you.
