My biological brother and sister are both normal sized and 2 of my step brothers and step sister are all obese. When I was 17 playing sports year round my 10 year old step sister would eat more than me at dinner. I've lived with other fat people and if you pay attention they all eat like hogs whether they let other people know it or not. Once you get to a certain size you get insulin resistant and its over at that point since they can't physically control their hunger anymore.

It was rage inducing. Fast forward a couple of years and she ballooned back up to around 350 or so. Seems she figured out she could eat all day long but just smaller portions.
Not too long ago she had full blown gastric bypass surgery. I'm sure she is still offering weight loss advice unless covid killed her.

When all along, the ****ers could have eaten the same (reduced) amount of food and gotten the same result.

A combination of two reasons. They don't actually eat healthfully, and/or you don't know what nutritious eating is. Genetic differences can also play a factor. What can work well for one person might be a bad diet for another.

Getting fat isn't that hard and staying fat is even easier.
Just have to overeat for a few months a year and then not take it off afterwards. Don't have it handy but I could swear that I've read it only takes 4 or 5 calories a day to maintain a pound of fat.
So you can gain 5 or 10 pounds a year from age 25 to age 35 and if you don't peel that back off every year thats 50 to 100 pounds.
Then to keep that weight on/maintain you only have to eat an extra 250 to 500 calories a day vs. your maintenance when you started out at your original weight.
Not saying people can't take control of their weight, just saying you don't have to eat 4,000 calories a day to maintain an extra 100 pounds- it's more like going from 2,000 calories a day to 2,500 calories a day.

Obviously, it's not very accurate on an individual basis because it doesn't account for activity or body composition etc., but it can give a ballpark idea of what would happen if someone over eats. If you put in a 30 year old, moderately active female. Height 5'6", weight 125 the metabolic rate is 2,021. Run the same calc with weight at 140 and you get 2,126. Basically, if you weigh 125 lb and only need 2,000 calories but eat 2,100 calories, eventually you will weight 140 lb. Just for reference 175 lb takes 2,372 calories, so, ballpark, an extra 350 calories per day would increase the woman's weight by 50 lbs. So anyway, I could have just kept it short but I do think the numbers are interesting and it was eye opening to me when I started looking at how much weight a person could gain do to steady over eating over a long period of time.

Counting calories works if it is done accurately [use accurate calorie information + weigh everything to the gram].
But it is a PITA. I know because I've done it. Probably have to do it again, though I was hoping not to.
Besides the increase in liquid calories from sugary drinks our standard portion sizes/calorie density is messed up.
If I was in charge of public health and wanted to make a dent in obesity I would put a steep tax on added sugars [meaning not natural sugar in fruit/milk OR sugars purchased as an ingredient to make food at home] and then start a500 Rule, meaning individual items or meals sold at restaurants or as single serving RTE meals in grocery stores would be limited to 500 calories strictly so that the general public could easily maintain around a 2,000 calorie a day intake. If a sandwich is 500 calories then you wouldn't sell it as a "combo meal" with fries. There are a lot of little changes that could be made like less fatty meat, lower calorie sauce/dressing, no cheese, smaller buns, etc.
I wouldn't restrict individuals from buying all the sugary drinks they want, or buying multiple items/meals to eat at one time- the foods with lots of extra added sugar would just cost more and if you wanted to eat 1,000 calories in one sitting you would need to order 2 meals or multiple items. Increase awareness that for *most people* 500 calories is a meal sized portion of food.
Because 3 meals X 500 calories + a snack or two [500 calories] is easy math compared to reading the labels on every food package and weighing everything you eat on a food scale.

Exactly. A lot of people who 'eat junk food whenever they want' actually don't consume a huge amount of calories overall. If their food intake was logged and their energy intake was quantified, you'd most likely find they barely eat outside of the odd occasion where they eat pizza, maccas or whatever. My biological brother and sister are both normal sized and 2 of my step brothers and step sister are all obese. Do people who 'can't control their hunger' still have an appetite if all they eat is plain chicken breast, rice and broccoli? I can't imagine still being hungry after that kind of appetite destroying meal.

I think her metabolism must just be really bad.
