Last time I moved I got a full size dumpster to throw out about 60% of what filled my house. I didnt miss any of it.

Kids toys, my shop, kitchen stuff and closets get purged at least once a year now.

Rule for most stuff is if you have not used it in a year you dont need it.

wife and i both consider ourselves minimalist yet somehow we always have excess junk. People always buying us useless gifts for the holidays/birthdays, etc. It gets annoying.

But we also have a 7 year old, so that makes living minimalistic even harder. We just strive to minimize the amount of crap as much as possible without overly stressing about it.

-Do I know what this item is? If I don't, then it gets thrown away. If I do...
-...When was the last time I needed to utilize this item? If its been longer than a year? it goes in the trash.
-If I don't know what the item is, and its been over a year since I've used it, does it have any value? If yes then I kept only so it can be sold.

Random charging cables to electronic devices I don't own anymore, mystery screws that probably came from an office chair or desk fixture, clothes I don't wear anymore and all sort of miscellaneous trinkets and bric-a-brac that was gifted to me over the years. Threw it all away.

I like the tidiness of my current abode. Its gotten to the point that I don't even want to go home to visit my parents because they're borderline hoarders, always prepping for the next apocalyptic event. If its not Y2K its 2012 or some other economic event that the media fear mongers them into hoarding crap They were the ones buying pallets of toilet paper from Costco during the pandemic, and they think i'm dooming myself to starvation because I don't have 20 years worth of canned food stashed away in a cupboard.
This is me to a T.
