A good portion of ancient Greeks were absolutely gay but the term “gay” did not exist back then just like social media did not exist back then either. These people had wives , girlfriends and would have parties with basically prostitutes at the same time. Banging younger dudes was no big deal for some of them. It is what it is but you can’t compare that stuff to present day LGBTQZ2.5 times. I would say homosexuality back then was more tame compared to those depictions of banging deers, goats, horses & dogs back then.

There was or course gay stuff going on, just like now, but it's massively overblown by modern sources, and the love of young boys which people associate with the Greeks was frowned upon in every Greek polis except Thebes and Elis. There was other forms of love (such as love of the mind) that were non physical or gay, but a modern audience without a good understanding of Greek culture could easily misinterpret some of the passages as outright gay. for example the way Socrates and Alcibiades go on in Plato's symposium seems gay, but Socrates also goes to great lengths in the text to explain his love is non physical. There's also many examples.of Xenophon harshly condemning gayness in the hellenica.

It also doesn't help that actually, there's no such entity as ' Greece' in the classical era like today , and each polis had its own rules, laws and ideologies although they shared a lot of culture. This only serves to confuse things further, because states had different beliefs and priorities (such as the aforementioned Thebes and Elis encouraging love between men, whilst it was frowned upon in athens)

People can think what they wish of course ,but OP does have a point. The 'greek gayness' is a bit overblown, and is not really anything like modern lgbtqafgdrf++(

No thanks , I can find better ways to spend my time. I was in actual Santorini, Mykonos & Athens last year on vacation hitting up all the historical sites and museums. Not interested in your “cultures war woke right video”. I will pass and take actual historical interpretations from actual archeologists that studied this stuff for years.

It was incredibly stable for it's time (i.e lycurgas up till maybe 420or so bc), until the growth of Athens, but yes I don't disagree that it's economic policy or reliance on helots made it fragile later on, we are not in disagreement here. My primary point is characterizing the sacred band as just a group of gays when they had two extraordinary leaders (Epaminondas and pelopidas), and claiming they annihilated the Spartans when the Spartans actually only lost proper one battle(Leuctra), and had 400 years of hegemony vs Thebes 20, is a little misleading and dishonest. You do have to also remember, that the Spartans were basically always at war which didn't help them (even when not fighting Athens etc, they would be fighting the Argives or similar)

The Spartans were elite in their day, primarily thanks to the helots taking their work burden and their constitution, but the Macedonians (after Phillip, of course)were far superior militarily to any Greek state, Including Sparta, but for some reason they don't quite have the spartan reputation. They set the standard for warfare worldwide for a good few hundred years before the Romans.

Sparta never recovered to relevance after Leuctra.
