Big problem with squats is once you get strong. They become incredibly taxing and time consuming. And they aren't just taxing on your legs. They tax your entire body. All of your energy. Etc.
By the time you warm up for a squat and finish your working sets. You can easily be 30-35 minutes into the leg workout with near all of your energy spent. After you've been lifting awhile and are reasonably strong they just take too much energy out of you and it takes too long to recover. Unless that's literally the only exercises you care about because your into power-lifting for example. They just aren't worth it.
Now that I've been training 17 years I get way more out of leg presses. TBH I don't even use a lot of weight on them either. No more then 5 plates for side.

So in 2023, the new motto is to not do compound lifts?

TBH I went 5+ years without doing a leg extension but now they are my favorite quad exercise.

“Steroids is now just a word that the lazy and ignorant use to describe any guy that has more muscle and dedication than them”– Mike O'Hearn
"I am like getting the feeling of cumming in the gym; I'm getting the feeling of cumming at home; I'm getting the feeling of cumming backstage; when I pump up, when I pose out in front of 5000 people I get the same feeling, so I am cumming day and night. It's terrific, right? So you know, I am in heaven."

I do both.
That said, I get brahs that only do leg press. Better stimulus and less time like others have said. Also, squats are by far the most common cause of gym injury accounting for 33% of the total. If you get a herniation in the gym, it's likely from that. You better be mentally on your form for every set, for as long as you lift. One slip up, and you're spending the next 6 months to a year in recovery.
