I always had three - one solid regular, one that I was either FWB or it was casual, and one rotating in that could easily replace one of the other two. Sometimes a fourth just because the other three weren't available or I also had some FWBs stashed in other cities if I was traveling.

Any more than that and it was too much. Plus, inevitably one of them would want more or want to have "the talk" or something would happen and that was regular enough to keep fresh women coming into the rotation.
