But it is brilliant none the less. Just have to respect it.Was gonna say, I would be shocked if any insurance company would even insure your son with a mclaren.

On a different note OP, I'm not a car guy, but any activity that you share with your kids is a good thing. GJDM.

As much as you think you trust him ...he's going to peer pressured to drive fast and probably will out of curiosity alone
Kind of like the difference between giving an untrained kid a loaded gun vs one who has grown up hunting. We save our fast driving for the race track. The 720 is so fast almost any thing you do puts you over 100mph. We already had the talk and he has been with me plenty of times to understand what is appropriate on the roads. On the track....different story. You can have a lot more fun and really get to experience the cars.

He has gained a healthy respect for what it means to drive. Are you going to let him use those crazy cars regularly?
Mirin in any case, I'm still driving the Honda I had in college lol

We are transitioning. The street cars are meaning less to me. They are still fun, but the tracking bug has really bitten us. Picking up this new car and then finishing my sons, will make for a busy fall for us. I am not sure what is coming after the McLaren. I tend to switch cars about after a year. Not sure what the future holds, but the track stuff is more important to me right now.

That is what really threw us into the car thing. There was nothing to do, but fortunately the car world kept on. We had events and gatherings ever week and got out and enjoyed life. The car world about universally rejected all the 'lockdowns'. We just all did our things. No masks, no vax's....and yet somehow we survived. Without cars, I am not sure if we would have had any memories from those times since it was a big black hole in everyone's life.Great pictures and priceless memories OP. Can't wait for my kids to get a little older and start doing things like that too. Although I shouldn't rush it, everyone keeps telling me you blink and they're asking for the keys LOL
So that was a lesson I learned. MAKE your moments. Like today. Is that part of it that is stupid to hand my son with a fresh license the keys to a 1000hp car and tell him to go have fun?.... Sure. Yes, there is a lot of that can be said for what can go wrong. BUT.....what are the odds, that someday when I am dead, and my son might be telling his grand children about the day he got his license and what his dad did. There is no value you can place on those things. And it could it that I cared to take him fishing, or threw a ball with him, or admired his artwork. It does not matter. Be a part of your kids lives and enrichen the experience for them. You only go around once!

Having anything else on top of that is just icing on the cake. But I lived for a few years with very little after the economy collapsed. I went from having quite a bit of 'stuff' (like having 3 helicopters at one time) to have very little. We had a roof over our head, and a mini van and a truck I still own. My kids were 3 and 5 then and I spent 3 years watching them get on the bus every morning, and being at the bus stop at 230 to see them get off.
Those years taught me where my real happiness in life came from. Prior to that, I was always chasing MOAR. I learned what was important to me. The 'stuff' is cool, but only if everything else is there go with it. I have many times over the past decade, gave up the opportunity to make more money because I was unwilling to make compromises to my life and how I want to live it. I live with a lot less and focus more on trying to find the balance to live life on my terms. Vs, becoming a slave to a black hole that will swallow you and never leave you feeling satisfied. Success can be like that I and I was lucky to learn a lesson at an early age.
Money does not buy happiness. Anything over and above meeting your needs is just a bonus. Can you have fun with it?....sure. But it is not a source of true happiness. NEVER sacrifice the life you want for money alone. It is not worth it. If you can find a path that keeps both in balance, than great. But I see decades of guys chasing a carrot they will never catch and then find themselves empty. Disconnected from their wifes, and kids. Unhappy...sure they may have some money, but the path they took was not worth it.
Keep your family first, and all will work out.

I have shown my kids how NOT to be defined by external things. I have owned a few lambos and several other exotics, and I dont own a single t-shirt or hat with logos on them. I dont flex and I dont like to be defined by external things. I own no name brand clothing and wont wear anything with a label. I dont want things to define me. I define myself. My kids have always seen this.
I might have some nice stuff, but I also have stuff that I greatly appreciate that does not cost a lot of money. I bought a Kia Sorrento and it is the favorite SUV I have ever had. I have had plenty of luxury stuff, but Kia I just love. We bought my wife a model X and she asked if we needed the keep the Kia and I just cant sell it. I like it too much. I also have a 2006 Nissan pickup that I bought new and will never sell. I love it. Things dont have to be expensive to be something I like.
Being self employed since 23, I have always demonstrated to my kids the importance of self reliance. I do everything myself. I am not too good for hard work. When the yard needs mulch, I go buy 3 pallets of mulch and we all do yard work as a family. I am not too good to cut my own lawn or wash my cars. I enjoy doing hard work. Any success in life has been because I was never afraid to work hard.
Even today, in our rental properties, I unclog toilets or go fix items if necessary. I dont consider myself too good for anything. My kids have seen this and grown up like this and neither my son nor my daughter put value in external things either. It is wonderful to see your kid become people you are proud of. It is also great to see your kids not care about 'stuff'.
To be honest, I was not wired that way. Growing up without much, I used to think 'stuff' was important. I'd like to think we have shown our kids what should be the focus of life and where you put your energies. On the flip side, if you work hard, nothing wrong with enjoying the fruits of your labor.
Take away all this stuff....I would still have just as much fun. The toys would be different. Perhaps a wrecked 10k Miata, Hell, maybe even something cheaper to bond over like fishing. The stuff is not the point. It is the moments you get to make.

Nice thread, OP. Glad to see you're having so much fun, and that your son is too.
You listed a bunch of achievements there - congrats, but this thread isn't about you, much as you're trying to make it so. Just like SS ffs, lol.

But he is not much different than I was at his age. At 18 I was 135lbs. I took up lifting after breaking my collar bone which ended my college hockey career. By the time I was 21 I was 190+ (yes nattie)

I do a few things. Real-estate investments for past 13 years. Income properties. But on a daily basis I design custom homes. I am self taught, but in construction in one form or another for almost 30 years. I used to run a larger business, but after 2008 I decided to just focus on what I love to do. So for the past 13 years, I just work from home with no employees. (used to have 50+ people I had to deal with). I could make MOAR, but I have chosen quality of daily life over stuff.Originally Posted By SteadySmokin⏩

I took all my belongings packed in garbage bags and old milk crates, and packed it in my truck I bought with working construction over the summers and I moved south... Not knowing what it would bring. I found myself down here, and within 4 months I started my first business. I did pretty well by all accords, but I was never happy. I had all kinds of stuff. I went on to open a helicopter business besides my two other businesses. I had a personal helicopter that I flew in and out of my home. I had a 9000 house that I designed and built myself. All the stuff you would say would make a person satisfied.
I was not. I was always looking at the next thing to achieve. In 09 I was almost killed. Suffered a broken neck and TBI. Had partial amnesia and short term memory loss. Took me about a year to recover and THAT is what changed my life for me. I started working out again (and have never stopped). I had been out of the gym for a decade. I slowed my life WAY down, and learned to be present for my family. Before I was always distracted. I lived a VERY simple life for quite a while.
These days I try to balance enjoying each day and making a better life for my kids. I could 'retire', but I enjoy doing things. Not sure I will ever retire. But having the flexibility to live life on your terms is worth more than any amount of money. I have had more and had less at times, and know that happiness does not come from the amount of stuff you have. With that in mind, I can enjoy things.

Keep being a good dad. I wouldn't give up on college for your son just yet. He likes gaming. What about trying to learn computer science and maybe make a game project? I am sure he will figure out what he likes. I had a student who seemed to HATE school, especially math and science, but he found his thing in urban planning of all things. He's now finishing his graduate degree and working for a city in Cali. You never know. Can't write kids off.
