People just accept it?

When family members complain, they say "we're short staffed" and all of a sudden, the family members are understanding? WTF?
More LOL. Do you think the hospital admins give af how the families feel about it? What are they going to do? Take their family to another hospital that is dealing with the same chit or worse?

They are trying to turn a profit and the govnt is trying to push towards a socialized system. Neither one sees you or your family as a priority. The healthcare workers might, but they are peons with no influence (myself included). So they do the best they can and the public suffers in the end.

Edit: And what people dont understand is it will get even worse when it is no longer proffitable.

I don't know personally except I feel it's like most high skill jobs which require those in the field to actually work, that there is a shortage. I'll just say that most fields the pay just isn't worth it. Kind of a snowball effect where the burden is put on those who are left and makes them want to quit.

Pro tip- nurses have always and will always complain of how understaffed they are and how they care for like a million patients at the same time.

Of course they have plenty of time magically to do choreographed dances and make tiktoks but thats beside the point.

This happened in a lot of workplaces during covid.

Well that's because the covid virus was mismanaged as hell. Yes, maybe a lot of people went in to the ERs w/relatively benign symptoms + there were wards w/unusual protocols treating covid positive patients. At the same time a lot of nursing was nearly shut down because procedures were halted and anyone who didn't believe that they had covid was avoiding going to a hospital.

I had a broken wrist during so I did go in for that. OTOH getting an iron infusion was delayed and other stuff was just shut down/cancelled.

You shouldn't leave a family member in the hospital alone if you can possibly avoid it. That's my take anyway. Who knows when a nurse will get around to a call if they have more urgent patients or just too many patients.
