These days games are all online and drm and chit, no one is saving their ps4 or xb1 stuff because it just becomes useless as games update, have drm, require internet, etc. Not only that but these console companies are remaking so much stuff and putting it on gamepass or psn as it is.

Imo, there's no point in collecting modern physical, in 15 years it won't be cool vintage gaming stuff that still works, it'll just be vintage gaming stuff that is a brick because it won't get updates anymore

but I'm gonna downsize my collection and keep only the ones that are special to me (nohomo), take them out of the storage boxes and fill a bookcase with them

all those different packaging and systems it's still gonna give a nostalgic feel even though I won't be using them to play those games anymore

even picking up a not so "old" 360 game f.e. the case alone takes me back in time, that's something digital media just can't emulate

I buy physical when the option is there.

I always liked tangible things but the world has changed .. movie stubs, concert tickets, flyers ...memories
having everything digital losing that aspect of things ... and value

Like books, I have always preferred to have physical copies of movies and video games. I guess I remain sort of skeptical of owning things that are just floating out in the ether somewhere. There are a few games I have downloaded in recent years without getting a physical disc, but the vast majority have been bought at the store. I don't really buy physical DVDs or Blu-Rays anymore though. I either stream things for free or pay the $3-4 every year or two to watch a movie I really want to see again.

Well yeah, thats why I just went with the digital version. But Im not going to belittle anyone selling chit thats going to be sitting unused collecting dust for an enternity. Especiallly for the wagecucks, they can recoup 1-3 hours of their hourly wage. Sell, trade, gift, give away, its the only benefit I see in physical discs.

obviously PS5/Series x you have it at home always connected online so this isn't an issue

but on nintendo switch and it being a on the go console I bought 90% of my games physical. I did buy 2 games (kirby and mario party) digital...

whenever my son/daughter want to play it on the go with no wifi, it will sometimes ask for a internet connection to verify that I can play the game..

so i have to whip out my phone turn on hotspot and have the switch connect to it just to load the fukin game up..

none of my physical games do that, and I will never buy a digital on portables again, some DRM bullchit or something


** also ubisoft has shown that it will shutdown access to its games digitally and physical. 99.9% of the time the game on disc does not contain the entire game and you still have to download files, happened with COD and other popular titles, so when they decide no more servers for those games and you want to reinstall it 15 years later it will be a brick instead of a playable game. we are now all renters of video games, nintendo switch and switch 2 might be the last console to have physical games you can launch without requirement of installing more data

Owning the disc means nothing, you still need internet for updates, but not any internet... Paid service from sony/Xbox. In 10 years your disc will just be a paperweight when these consoles are bricks because they aren't being updated or supported anymore.

Owning a physical disc is just an illusion of ownership. You still can't play your games without being cucked by your console overlords.

The only difference is now you have the inconvenience of getting up and changing disc's.

Is this a new thing I don't know about? My PS4 games update all the time over WiFi, and I don't pay for any PlayStation service. I haven't bought a PS5 or XBox Series X yet, so maybe I'm out of the loop.

Yeah because the ps4 is still being supported and games are still being made for it.

Even on pc, games can shut down servers and dead their game forever, even tho I paid money for it.

For instance, if Killzone was your favorite mp shooter, you can't boot up your ps3 and go play online anymore. Servers are gone.

online services are not the same as updates

for updates you just need "normal" internet and not a subscription to Xbox/PS

this. even with physical media, the developer could put out a patch requiring you to be connected at all times to play the game. or even the console maker itself could add that to an update.

the only way to truly "own" the software would be to never connect your console to the internet, and then like someone else says, your console is gonna die eventually anyways.

if you are truly worried that in 10 years a dev is gonna pull a game from your steam library (which i doubt would happen, but still), then by the time they do that, you'll be able to emulate that console on your phone anyways, so you could still play your games.

the only reason really to buy physical media is for the collector, which is also pretty cool if that's your thing, or if you have kids and want to share the game, also makes sense.

Physical esp if a new release(digital here in my side of the world for PS, is sometimes $10 more expensive on new releases). Plus some juicy pre-order bonuses like a steelbook or shirt.

Older games, almost always digital cuz the discounts are higher.

I also love owning physical copies, like Blu-rays and books.

extreme case f.e. Cyberpunk, if you have a "clean" system and play the version that is on the disc you're in for a rough time

Physical every time, but I don't buy many games anymore and got rid of the dead games, I.E. Halo, Gears.

I buy it so i can trade it in / sell it once i beat it. If i could buy all the games in physical media i would as i barely ever replay games after i beat them. I got the new armored core 6 without having to pay any money by trading in resident evil 4 remake and street fighter 6. Meanwhile i have 100's of games sitting in my steam collection i never plan on playing and i got no money back from them.

Being an Eastern Europeanbrah gives me the privilege to download video games as I please without legal issues. They legit sell pirated games in stores and no one cares, lmao.
