closest might be dave winfield...drafted by nba, aba, nfl and mlb. he probably had a legit shot to make a team in any of those (averaged 11/6 as a soph in basketball) he said he did know how to skate too lol

maddux at his peak was one of the best ever but it was a fairly short peak so it's hard to say he was one of the best


between 1992 and 1998, he was absolutely fantastic - every season was below 3 or 2 era. Before that and after that, he finished with around a 3-4.5 era finishing his career with a 3.16 era. Compare this to Clayton Kershaw who has had 13 seasons of sub 3 era and has a career 2.50 era


I think if maddux retired close to his peak, he would have a stronger case as one of the GOAT as his career era would be in mid to upper 2's. He played so long when he shouldn't have and that lead to a lot of mediocre seasons in mid 3s to 4+ era range that ruined his career numbers

maddox was pretty great for like 15 years straight. I'm pretty new to these advanced analytics but heard people mention this elite company that the 30 or so guys with a WAR over 100 are in. Maddox is one of those 30 dudes. Only like 10 of those 30 are pitchers. And Maddox did it as an average looking librarian. plus like a record 15 gold gloves that further show his gawd like hand eye coordination. also heard it mentioned that maddox played a little 4d chess by throwing guys cookies to hit when it wouldn't hurt him just so he could set them up the next time he faced them.
