They have loveless, empty marriages, but they love to show off their vacations and possessions. This. There's no way he was surprised by her actions - he just never had the convo upfront and hoped it wouldn't turn out the way it did.
She married him to provide a lifestyle for her. Even if they're only slightly misaligned on some things, it's a flawed dynamic to begin with and destined to fail.

95% chance her physical interest in him is toast at this point.
