I never could have detoxed myself, never. The hospital was a god-send. It only took 5 days with IV ativa n. Incredible. Congrats on your 1 year coming up. Mine is in mid November. I can’t get back the time, health, or money, and the misery and agony I inflicted upon myself will always remain, but at least I can make the right choice from now on.
When you talk to other alcoholmaxxin cels you realize youre not unique. It was the best part of attending AA daily. Only an alcoholic can understand another alcoholic.


My sponsor finally go sober in his 50's and been sober for 20+ years. Unless you're dead its never too late as cliche as it sounds.

I don't want to tell people how to live their lives but, judging by your post history, it might be time to speak with someone who knows what they're doing so they can help you make positive changes. People from all walks of life seek help for substance abuse. It's a really accessible service if you're willing to work on yourself.

I did not turn yellow, although my sclera did have a yellow tinted. I did have moderate ascites, which is the worst experience in the world by the way.

And yes, it’s definitely cirrhosis confirmed by ultrasound. Ascites due to alcoholism occurs in then setting of cirrhosis due to portal vein hypertension, due to stiffness of the liver caused by cellular fibrotic changes.

And it’s only natural that people may be disgusted by me or find me shameful or worthy of disdain and mockery, but believe me nobody hates me as much as I hate myself. Rest assured, I possess an appropriate level of self-loathing for one in my position, having squandered the gift of youth, health, and promise, having cast my life asunder so maliciously. Time will tell if I will live long enough to ever forgive myself.

Whoa whoa whoa I'm not judging you. I'm glad you share your story and that you're better. Sorry not my intention to be a nag and make you repeat yourself. When it happens to somebody you know it rings home. You're an easy person to turn to and ask since you experienced a lot of the same. Friend just told me that he wasn't diagnosed with cirrhosis but it was the stage before it (which I thought was total bs as has some friends I have that work at hospitals. They all said if you get to the point of ascites and yellow it's 100% cirrhosis).

A lot of us probably push it past the recommended 2 drinks per day limit that doctors recommend, so just curious how easy it is to get to this state, or if it takes pure work and purposeful punishment of alcohol to reach cirrhosis.

Many people with fibrosis or cirrhosis are asymptomatic, that’s the amazing thing. I was probably cirrhotic years ago. By the time you reach ascites, there’s no way you don’t have cirrhosis. I hope your friend is OK. If he stopped drinking he might be doing fine.

It takes different amounts for different people. There are studies about the amount of time and average weekly drinks for cirrhosis to become present. It varies but it can happen within 10 years of daily drinking. You can get it with beer. And you don’t have to get drunk for it to happen.


By the time symptoms present, you’re in trouble. And if you are wondering if you have an alcohol problem, you do have one.

That being said, plenty of people can have a healthy relationship with alcohol and be just fine. But alcoholism and liver disease requiring transplants are at an all-time high. Think about that.

The crazier thing is that for some it never happens. One of my friend's is Italian (the friend who turned yellow is Mexican and genetically they're the worst race to have problems with alcohol affecting their body). His dad has gotten drunk every night of his life for the last 30 years. Had a mild heart attack in his early 60s and was put on a one drink per night limit. He bought a fish bowl and pours almost the entire handle of that Carlo Rossi wine into it and deems that his one drink for the night. No cirrhosis for this man. Some people just get lucky, and others get punished real quickly I guess.

He could have it and be asymptomatic, it could pop up any year or maybe it never will and his liver is fine. There’s no way to know until either symptoms present or until it’s seen via MRI, liver elastography, ultrasound, or biopsy. From what I understand MRI and elastrography can indicate it, but ultrasound is the gold standard due to being non-invasive whereas biopsy is a dead ringer but is invasive so is avoided if possible.

In to offer support to OP, but there's not much else I can say that wasn't said perfectly already by Ausaric and Goat_187.

I will say, don't delude yourself into thinking you are in a better position than other alcoholics just because you are only drinking lite beer, getting smooches, maintaining humor, or other cope. Alcohol is still the same poison no matter how you package it, and the negative influence of it on your life should be glaringly apparent to you. You are still powerless over alcohol.

Let's just say when you see it you'll know it instantly. You won't be wondering if they're just fat like John Daly or have liver failure. A completely skinny bodied person will look like they're pregnant with triplets. It's very sad to see honestly.

My understanding is it's bile or something that can't pass through the liver and redirects into the gut. People can get sick and die from it infecting them.
