This. I used to play lacrosse and if I didn't have to wear elbow pads or shoulder pads I wouldn't. I was not the only one with this mentality and I was on the "safer" side. Granted, you aren't exactly going to die without elbow/shoulder pads, but there were goalies that often wouldn't wear chest protectors even though people have died from that.

Hockey is a hell of a lot more physical so I think protection is even more important in that sport, but I guarantee that mentality is prevalent in that sport as well. Neck protection would have to be a strictly enforced rule to ever get player traction.

There is almost no probability of this happening unless it was intentional. That piece of chit did an intentional kick to the throat.
Having an extra piece of protective gear for an accident that's nearly statistically impossible isn't addressing the real issue...that particular player. Who murdered another guy in cold blood.

Apparently he is known to be a dirty player and has spent seasons as the person with the most time in the penalty box.
Yet, the media runs cover for him.
People at the arena are saying"He was crying, we feel bad for him!"

Not saying he intended to kill, but he absolutelyat leastintended to injure the other guy.

If I had kids, I'd aim them toward individual, non-contact sports....

Tennis, Mountain bike racing (dangerous, but in your own control), golf, etc.

Can't trust some idiot to not intentionally harm you if given the chance.

He kicked him in the neck knowing that he had a blade attached to his foot.

Should be charged with first degree murder and let all his expensive lawyers earn their money arguing it down to voluntary manslaughter.

Yeah, looking back at that it definitely looks like he's throwing his foot up to slow him down as he's side stepping the other guy. I doubt he was going for his jugular but you got fuking knives on your feet you don't kick them up. This guy deserves murder charges doing chit like that.

I don't know he missed the one guy and it kind of looks like he's trying to keep his balance. It's definitely not a clear cut murder. Razor close to manslaughter though.

although it looks intentional, I don't really know how it would ever be possible to have that kind of accuracy in that kind of moment to do something like that with your skate.

Has to be a total freak accident. I don't know, man.

I'm 50/50 on whether or not it was intentional. If it was intentional I don't think he was trying to kill him, but still incredibly fuked up given it is just a sport. Like punching a dude in a bar fight and him dying when he lands on his head awkwardly.

I don't know enough about hockey to really know if the way his skate went up when he fell is really a thing.

Any beef between the two before the kick? If not, most likely a freak accident. At least it looks that way to me.

Not a chance in hell. He was trying to kick him and hurt him, and he ended up killing him.

Doubt the throat was intended, but he was attempting to injure the guy.

The NUMBER ONE vertical result was 25 inches.

To put that into perspective, 400lb NFL bloatlords still vert 30+ inches.

Not sure if charges can be brought up
First, it's impossible to prove intent. Second, there are many activities in sports where you are trying to inflict damage on someone. Is this just different because of the result? If u bean someone on purpose in baseball and he dies? If an NFL lineman block someone at their legs, and they die?

For one thing guys in the nhl columbine are 17-18

Nfl columbine guys are early 20s

The most important thing in hockey is leg strength.

A lot of them aren't huge in the upper body.

Ofcourse they aren't going to jump like an NFL player
