I have a 401k, an IRA, and two rental properties.

I don't plan on 'retiring' in the traditional sense. The many hats I wear in life are all things I'm passionate about and I plan on engaging in these endeavours until I drop dead.

Bodhy is one of the worst posters on this board, but he's not wrong here (although there is something sad about people who need to have their employer tell them what to do all day otherwise they'd be bored).

I'm 2 years into retirement now, and "what to do with your time" is probably the biggest thing people overlook. Yeah, the money is important. But it's really themeansversus thewhat.

I read about it prior to retiring, but what your hobbies are prior to retirement will probably the same as when you do retire. If that's just watching TV or playing games, that's probably what you'll do. That's not to say you can't take up new hobbies, but it's certainly more difficult than just saying "I'm going to do this and stick to it."

Me
Retiring at 55 with pension. My bad math says it should be around 80% of current salary. If I retired today it would be around 7-8k. So in another 15 years probably 9-10k depending on raises.
457k which I am trying to play catch up on.
Roth 457 which I am trying to play catch up on.
SS which could or could not be there for me

Retirement accounts, real estate, and brokerage account.

Wife and I max out our 401K's every year. All extra money from work income, dividends, and all rental profit goes straight back into investments. I have a net worth of just under a million right now and I have about 31 years until retirement (unless I decide to retire early), so should be sitting pretty.

nice thread op, repped.

i have a house that, in theory, should continue to appreciate and in about 27yrs would be worth around $750k or thereabouts. currently worth $530k w/an assumable 2.25% rate. so far it is paying for itself with short term renters. it can be a PITA to manage but everything can be at some point.

started contributing to a 401k a few weeks ago and am gonna keep up with that.

also i am moving back to a LCOL area of ohio and the plan is to purchase a 3/2 condo (would be $846 all in), live in it for a year then rent out & repeat. do that enough times to leave a W2.

of course all that is god willing and if my health doesn't decline.

-Currently receiving that VA money
-will receive an IBEW pension
-will revive a pension from my employer
-100%employer match of up to 6% Roth 401k contribution
-Roth IRA although I’m on the verge of making too much money to contribute
-throwing around the idea of putting some money into a HYS account but I’m lazy
-I don’t want to work any more. I just want to chill and do what I want.

My wife and I both have 401k's that we contribute quite a bit to, and I have a pension on top of that.

But I'm also at an age where it seems so strange to think I would ever want to retire. I can't imagine wanting to get up with nothing to do.

Not sure I'd ever want to do that. I think I'll always have some sort of employment, even if I'm doing less because I'm too old.

I got taken out behind the woodshed during my divorce and was negative net worth a few years ago as a result.

My plan is 401k and working till 70. Probably still doing a few days a week after that.

I don't have any "plans".

Finances are a non-issue and I could have retired years ago. I dropped from 80 hours a week to 40 when we had a kid and that is working fine for me atm. As my life evolves, my working situation will evolve to suit that life, rather than having a planned endgame.

I have a serious question for those who think they will have access to their retirements(myself included) 25 years from now.

When you no longer have the electoral power to elect like minded politicians who believe your assets are yours and does not belong to the State/less privilege.....then what happens to your retirement.

You think you magically get to walk away with 50K a month until death when 70% of our new(mostly imported) electorate says, I dont think so.

The biggest threat from politicians is Roth IRA/Roth 401k.

Traditional variants should be safe.

Am 45, retiring in 9.5 years.

PERS: 70% of high 5 year average based off 30 years of service. Currently $11K+ a month, assuming $15K when I retire.

401A: Maxes out at whatever the Social Security contribution is that year, and Employer match 6.13%. Currently 7 figures, and should double by the time I retire. I don’t plan on touching it anyhow except for RMD’s when that time comes.

ROTH 457(b): Have been maxing it out at $750 every two weeks for almost 10 years now. Good to pass on to my kids since aren’t subject to Estate Tax.

ROTH IRA: Older Roths from back when I could still qualify. Good to pass on to my kids.

Wife is 32 (real estate agent, married a couple years ago, does well), and has a small 401K and some ROTH’s. I don’t use her retirement funds when doing retirement or financial planning.
