1) Dont make anyone your source of happiness. Keep your hobbies, friends and goals. You cant control anyone and despite your best efforts they might leave or break your heart. You have to have a life of your own in the event that occurs. In the end Co-dependency is not a good look

2) Your hard work does not get you promoted. Your job pays you to work hard and do a good job. If you want to get promoted do something outside of the box. Build a business, training, cost reduction plan. it doesnt matter if it is ever accepted or implemented, it separates you from the sheep.

Pretty much everything I thought I knew as a teenager was an illusion if not complete BS.

A lot of good advise on here. My contribution.

When I was younger I believed that if you worked hard and advanced your skills you would be promoted and given pay raises. For a long time when it wasn't happening despite my advancement I believed there must have been flaws in my work. I feel retarded that I didn't realize it sooner but once I did, things started to change.

Most of it is sure to be generic advice we've all heard thousands of times before that sounds nice to say but rarely actually does much practical for anyone, even if they tried to have a positive approach about it. Just being realistic about it.
