Design engineers are the first to be fired as soon as we get a functional prototype. It's the manufacturing engineers who are then tasked with figuring out how to configure the assembly line to produce the unit on a mass scale with the cheapest available component parts.
Design engineers are expendable, manufacturing engineers have slightly more value, but the useless f/cks in finance who don't generate revenue (but leech off the company) are the ones who have most survivability in corporate America.

Yeah I know you feel OP. My last job had a bunch of senior-level people get canned a few times. People who had been with the company 20-30 years -- a few people like that, actually. I was laid off years later and I think it's because I was there so long my salary was expendable as they could hire a similar person for maybe 20k less per year. The days of sticking with a good company for over a decade, hoping you get some nice perks or recognition, at long over. It's really best to jump ship every few years or so. I guess the business world is cutthroat enough to where profits are 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for considerations. As if margins everywhere are just so damn tight.

Imagine he joined in 1996. Let's say he started at $60k base. Assuming zero promotions, zero other considerations like that in general. If he got 3% bumps annually, his base salary would now be $133k. Likely he had promotions, maybe even one time entertained an offer elsewhere then stuck around because of a counter offer further increasing his pay. But even without that, it's likely his salary more than doubled.
Also, if your company is like many others, he probably unlocked some extra vacation hours due to his tenure. IE my company gives you 3 weeks worth of EXTRA vacation by the 25 years mark, versus someone starting out. All that extra vacation, and a larger salary than others, even if he's an expert, his output needs to have caught up with that too for higher ups to not get salty.

When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

Events like this are why I'm happy that I'm a union member and can't be laid off unless there are mass numbers of layoffs. Seniority rules and I'll retire with a pension.

27 years? Probably age related.
At least he got a nice severance package. I wouldn't get a severance package. No bonuses, no RSUs, no employee discounts. They can let me go at any time, which can be scary. Unemployment hardly pays for anything.
But that's what you get to get a 9-5 job instead of one where you work evenings and weekends.
