If your smart you will lie about (irrelevant) basic details on the internet that would help obfuscate your identity

One day you are freezing your butt off because you live in North Dakota and the utilities just shut off. The next day your are pissed because your Aregentian government is inflating your dollars away

The reason you don't understand is because you're looking at it with your own mindset. It makes absolute sense if you view it from the perspective of someone who lacks self discipline, and/or isn't happy with what they've achieved in their life.

Imagine you're somewhat of a loser, you don't have a huge amount going for you, and you're in your 30's or 40's, but you post on a gay bodybuilding forum. Now you have the opportunity to escape your mundane existence, and LARP as something better on the internet. Sure, being given respect and props for something that you don't really have or possess isn't as good as actually having or possessing that thing, but if you don't have it, or have any chance of having it at all, then LARPing on the internet at least gives you the opportunity to have some kind of pseudo-experience as to what it would be like to have that thing, which i would imagine people who are insecure enough to LARP would consider better than nothing, and it probably gives them a small dopamine kick.

So basically, LARPing online allows one to escape their own mundane existence, and get some kind of taste, or pseudo experience of what it would actually be like to not be a loser. Of course not as good as the real thing, but if you don't have/won't experience the real thing anyway, then perhaps its 'better than nothing'. Of course they probably don't conceptualise it in this way in their head, but i suspect the ultimate truth looks something like this.

I suppose it doesn't occur to these kinds of people that they could actually get their head down, enact self discipline and achieve the things they LARP like they have in reality. There are of course people inbetween the two spots with the 'fake it till you make it mentality'. However, people are all made different, some people have stronger will, and some people are naturally more anxious and insecure, or driven by their more base emotions. It is what it is, the internet takes all sorts of people.

To be honest though, i think a lot of people lie (or perhaps deceive ourselves is a better description) very lightly without realising it... as humans, we tend to have an idealised conception of ourselves rather than the actual reality, and we behave as if we are that idealised conception, at least in our mind which isn't actually who we really are. We do the same to partners frequently too, which i think is why men are often so utterly devastated when they are cheated on; because they view their partner through a sort of idealised projection, rather than what their partner actually is, and so it comes as a shock when that idealisation is shattered.

In the human brain, with our ability to detach and compartmentalize, a simulated imagined awesome reality is better than a bullchit meaningless one.

Thanks for forcing the idea our lives have to have meaning society.

We could have just existed and loved but now we have to pay taxes and wait in line.

Because they were taught at a young age that lying is acceptable.

You tell your children of Santa Clause. And boogie men if they donโ€™t behave. And Easter bunnies. And when they later grow up to find out it was a lie, lying will simply be a norm, acceptable.

Look at all these people that lie about having a mental disability. There is a subreddit for it: fakedisordercringe

All about garnering attention for people that would otherwise get none.

I have always tried to be more honest online because I know there are those internet detectives who can and will find everything out about you.

I don't understand why people use fake pics on the internet or dating apps. What's the point of being complimented on that?

Plus if you meet IRL then it's obviously not the same person.

I had a 25 year old guy post my BMW on social media where he's sitting on the hood and said that was his new car. You can see the trunk was open as I was trying to get stuff out of the trunk?

Then everyone was telling him what a nice car it was and acting like he was some kind of mogger. It was hilarious if it wasn't so sad.
