Everyone I see who was laid off still haven't found jobs. Literally all of them are chronically unemployed now (6+ months unemployed). Was 2009 really worse than this?

I think a lot of this is just normalization of the tech industry.
For the last 15 years software engineers could demand $150k+ salaries out of college while mechanical or electrical engineers were lucky to get $80k.
This was sustained by the massive growth of the tech industry, but that's mostly over now.
And we're seeing that there really aren't any barriers to entry in those software jobs, at least nothing another engineer can't do.
Expecting to make $150k+ WFH 6 hours a day at the bottom of the org chart was always too good to be true, it's just coming back to reality.

My dad had to take another less paying job around that timeframe.. I think in that market it was def tougher than it is now
I decided to join the military around that timeframe cause I was seeing nothing in terms of a long standing career

Myself and everyone I know are gainfully employed and still routinely have recruiters reaching out. Maybe if you had made better choices in life you'd be more valuable.
