Depends on the context. In academia students and admin typically refer to professors as doctor.

The first time. Then it's customary for the Prof to say how how he or she would like to be addressed. 95% of the time in my experience they just want you to use their first name when talking, but not in writing.

Never write "Bill, sorry my paper is late" way too colloquial and informal. But if you see Dr. Bill in the saloon and buy him a Kamikaze shot the night before the paper is due and say "Bill my paper be late," you're fine.

This seems to be more a thing in countries outside the United States. I find it humourous that countries like France that had revolutions to remove their monarchy are predisposed to this type of hierarchical labeling.

Even things like Mr. And Mrs. And the formal vs informal you and associated verbage are still big things in Europe.

I cannot speak for the British, but Americans have gone the way of even kids referring to adults without formality and post COVID a lot of "experts" are being devalued as well.

The US has more of a customer to business relationship while in countries like France these same transactions are more requesting assistance from an authority (government titled or authorized person).

That might be true at community colleges or small liberal arts universities where relationships are closer between student and professor. At larger universities, it is rare for professors to be on a first name basis with undergraduate students. The exception to this is when they work closely with the professor in research, but even then it’s not the norm.

The whole designation is antiquated and should be done away with, or call all doctorates that.

No special favoring from society picking who they respect more at any given point in time.

Academia: it's a cultural norm.

Outside of academia: you sound like a twat.

TBH, it isn't something that arises very much in general usage anymore. People used to get addressed as mr xyx or miss xyz and say "it's doctor xyz", but that has changed. In many, if not most, of the settings where people would have previously been formal enough to call you mr/miss/mrs, they are too scared of pronouns etc to use them and now address you as first name last name or even just first name.

NB: never use dr on medical forms/paperwork.

UK angle - they would be laughed out of the room by others - esp by those senior to them - even at the most libtard uni's.

Majority of academics/researchers are PHD's or working towards it - just part of the job to get promoted in academia here, ultimately means nothing.

(I work with a load of them) - in most of the proper sciences, a PHD is the norm tbh.

No and since the norm of being called a 'doctor' means actual medical doctor. I just think its laughable. If you are at a University I can understand why you might address your professor as Dr. But outside of that LMAO.

I'll refer to anyone with a legit PhD as "Dr." if they ask, or if that is how they were introduced.

If you have a PhD is anything related to women's issues, or worse, an EdD, then fooking LOL@your fake doctorate. Might as well call it a a cucktorate degree.
