5'10 170 is an excellent weight. Wish i could hit 200lbs and stay lean, but floating around 185 looks and feels awesome on me. Pushing my cals beyond what i eat now is not a good feeling so I just avoid doing it. When i was 170 i also felt great with less effort (feeding). Staying at the weight I'm at really requires a lot of food.

if you took the average man, say 5'10 170-180 lbs skinnyfat and teleported him to 1920s America he'd probably be a fat freak who couldn't fit into clothes and barely into a car. People were a lot smaller back then. Have you ever seen a Ford Model A or a WWI infantry jacket? Looks like they were made for children.
Now take the average gym-cel (6' 200 lbs, semi-shredded) and he'd basically be in the circus as "world's strongest man" or something if he was teleported to the 1920s.

I agree with OP. BMI is perfectly fine for the general population.
Very few people strength train (or do any fitness) at all seriously. Of course for this board overall it’s a silly measurement, but that’s just because most of us here do some form of strength training.
At 6’3” 220 BMI puts me at 27.5, or just above overweight. I agree with this because while my abs are visible standing up, I get some noticeable fat around my midsection when I sit. When I can have visible abs sitting, that’s when I’ll consider myself lean.

Sedentary people are a problem anyway. If you don't exercise then you're unhealthy regardless of BMI. So thinking in terms of people who lift is the only thing that makes sense. In which case the BMI ranges for fat/obese make no sense.

BMI is crap. It grossly overestimates the number of "overweight" and "obese" men in their 20's when most of them are gymmaxxed.

bmi probably accurate for 95% of people...of course every dude that picks up a weight thinks they are in some special group of "bmi doesn't apply to me and all muh muscles"
the healthiest way for people to look is what would be considered slender, skinny or twink by modern standards. like 5'9/140-170lbs for the average guy...easiest on heart/joints, etc.

OP has a point considering the BMI table was created 50 years ago
nowadays the standard for being overweight has shifted due to muh fat acceptance and muh big is beautiful (sad!!!!)
if you're not athletic or a lifter it's pretty spot on
a 5'10 couchpotato weighing 180 lbs is overweight, deal with it

When did the average Joe start thinking they were an outlier when it comes to BMI? I think the problem is when the average person is chubby, you being slightly less chubby makes you think you aren't still chubby.
