Have you ever been self employed before? A 1099 employee writes off 67 cents per mile on his taxes. It's only based on his mileage. If someone who is an Uber driver has high mileage, it means he's earning a lot of money. You must be a little slow.

Ok so say his car insurance is 200 a month

730 hours in a month and he used 6

Add an additional $1.64 to his all in expenses. Pretty negligible tbh.

I've been self employed for over 10 years now LMAO....

the Uber driver in my OP had $300 of revenue from his trip, he gets to DEDUCT $201 from that revenue, so he has to pay taxes on $99 of income.

So he doesn't pay taxes on the other $201, BECAUSE ULTIMATELY THAT IS THE COST OF HIS 6 HOUR DRIVE....

Miscers think he collects $300 from uber, then the IRS pays him an additional $201 for driving uber.... um, no.

If he's driving an EV or something simlar, he's only paying like $10 for this drive. The rest is just based on his time.

wrong:
According to Tesla, the total cost of ownership of a 2021 Tesla Model 3 RWD, over five years and 60,000 miles (96,500 km),is about $0.63/mile($37,800 total).

$99 divided by 6 hours of drive time is $16.50 per hour BEFORE TAX.

Wish I could have done the math quickly in the car and given him the bad news, but I didn't do it until this morning.

according to misc accountants, wear & tear on your car is almost free, AND the IRS is giving away additional free money for each mile you drive uber.

Most people in positions like that only see revenue, not expenses. For example, if he has an EV he will have to buy a new one once the battery craps out that much sooner. If it's a gas vehicle, he pays for gas every shift and will have additional maintenance, but probably doesn't factor that into his income.

If I was in a position like that I'd have to be making at least $25 an hour NET in order to justify doing it. So example of a six hour shift: one tank of gas at $50, likely food on the road at $15, depreciation of car/maintenance at x amount per mile. Even if you made $200 during that six hours it still would barely be worth it. Meanwhile a lot of people would say "ZOMG $1000 a week working thirty hours sign me up!".

There is a LOT of bad information in here holy hell. Real business owners and people that drive for a living know just how fukking stupid Uber/Lyft are.

If you're not in a big city driving during peak hours (thus more money) you're basically working for free.

Nah brah, today I learned that car ownership cost is roughly $0, and the IRS is somehow sending out money to people for driving Uber.

I guess my driver yesterday might actually be a miscer.

I’m gonna use a 2021 Toyota Corolla for the example since it’s a typical Uber car.

3 hour trip at an average highway speed of 65 mph = 195 miles + return trip = 390 miles. No way I believe he did that many miles on backroads.

The corolla gets 38 mph highway so 10.26 gallons of gas.

Let’s say gas is 3.60 a gallon that’s $36.94

He has to do an oil change every 5000 miles. It costs him roughly $60.. his trip is 1/13 of an oil change so $4.61 in oil cost.

Next is depreciation on his vehicle.. here are two similar corollas in terms of trim level and year with a mileage spread of 55,040

I’m gonna use the carfax value not the selling price to figure out that each mile costs roughly 6 cents in depreciation on his car.

This means the trip cost him $23.40 in depreciation.

Average tires last 45,000 miles and will cost him approximately $250 per tire so he spent
$8.66 in tire life (for all 4 tires)

So all in his trip cost him $73.61

For a net profit of $226.39

/6 = $37.73 per hour.

That’s not that bad tbh

Btw you such at math

And to take it a step further he's spending 18 cents a mile in actual cost but the IRS is letting him write it off at a rate of .65 so they are giving him an extra .47 a mile.. for a bonus deduction of $183.30 on his taxes.. lucky him.
Hes a 1099, and has to pick either mileage or depreciation/all costs associated with the car, cant use both as a write off.

Are there Uber/Lyft drivers that make decent $ per hour. Yes. They add grubhub/Doordash in. Work/live in a low congestion metro area with entertainment, and are strategic about what rides they take and keep. I've had 5-6 drivers drop my ride after they accepted it, clearly gaming ride selection.

But is this most drivers? No, not even close. Most are idiots like the one in the OP that suck at math and rationalize the pay because they work when they want on their terms. They like the freedom and their lives are subsidized by government assistance and/or their parents so it doesn't matter anyway.

This.

Also, new immigrants don't pay taxes on privately owned/operated businesses for the first 5 years, assuming they are legal. Also, illegal 1099 immigrants are never going to pay those taxes. Also, low earning American 1099 employees are notorious for being delinquent on taxes.

The number of 1099 tradies that go a decade or more w/o paying taxes is epidemic. When it finally catches up, they use negotiating services to pay a fraction of what they owe. If you have little to no assets and aren't a w2 employee, you are almost impossible to lock down when it comes to taxes if you don't want to pay them.

I personally know 2 tradies that 1099 and went over 10 years not filing a return. Lived with his old lady in section 8 housing in her name. Not married. Between his 1099 income and cash jobs, they were rolling.

A Tesla doesn't need a new battery after 60k miles u retard. Literally the $0.63/mile is the cost of an EV that doesn't even use gas. So $0.67 per mile for a gas vehicle is CONSERVATIVE. The actual average in the USA is closer to $0.73/mile.

Well, according to the misc, you really better be reporting your uber miles to the IRS, because somehow (although it hasn't been explained yet) the IRS is paying drivers an additional $0.67 per mile over and above what uber is paying them.

mind = blewn.

Literally only low IQ tards do uber... people THINk they are making money, but if they actually looked at the REAL math.. cost of doing buisness, etc. They'd all quit. They don't understand the difference between GROSS profit and NET profit. Wear and tear on your equipment should be factored into your pricing, but uber doesn't allow people to do that, so they drive for a pre determined rate. They're wearing out their cars for a few bucks, meanwhile vehicle pricing is off the charts. They also ban any vehicles older than 10 years old which basically ensures you lose money. Only way taxi's are profitable is because they charge out the ass and use FULLY DEPRECIATED old cop cars and lincoln town cars. Dummies driving people around in their 2 year old 55k dollar yukon aren't making chit.

I feel the need to explain to the Miscers who are confused about the mileage deduction how it would actually break down.

We have our $300 gross revenue which would normally be taxed at 22% federally based on the expected tax bracket the dude would be in.

So he would normally owe $66 dollars in tax on the trip.

Now we plug in the mileage deduction of .67 x 195 miles driven and we get a grand total of $130.65 in write offs. So instead of paying 22% of $300 he’s paying 22% of $169.35

So instead of paying $66 in taxes he’s paying $37.25

Now the real magic comes later. If he can write off enough of his income (which he likely will) he’ll take himself from that 22% tax bracket to the 12% tax bracket which means he’ll only be taxed $20.32 on the $300

Any questions?

Just read the replies ITT, and you will see that almost nobody knows what you're talking about.
I feel the need to explain to the Miscers who are confused about the mileage deduction how it would actually break down.

We have our $300 gross revenue which would normally be taxed at 22% federally based on the expected tax bracket the dude would be in.

So he would normally owe $66 dollars in tax on the trip.

Now we plug in the mileage deduction of .67 x 390 miles driven and we get a grand total of $261.30 in write offs. So instead of paying 22% of $300 he’s paying 22% of $38.70

So instead of paying $66 in taxes he’s paying $8.50

Now the real magic comes later. If he can write off enough of his income (which he likely will) he’ll take himself from that 22% tax bracket to the 12% tax bracket which means he’ll only be taxed $4.64 on the $300

Any questions?
Yes, where do you buy a car that costs literally $0/mile to drive?
