Eh, maybe in peak condition, but part of the NFLPA's player agreement, they CAN'T be made to do conditioning (sprints, etc) in practice. NFL players would peter out fairly quickly.

Isn't that why they keep having timeouts? So the fatties can rest? Rugby players generally look far faster/fitter/stamina.

The 2nd guy on the rugby list apparently left Rugby to try and break into the NFL but sat on a practice squad for 3 years before being released and returning to Rugby.

This. Outside of plain old physical contact, they're completely different sports. Put the best rugby player in the world in the NFL and he might do ok in some aspects, but won't do much. Take the best NFL player in the world who's best suited for Rugby (maybe someone like Aaron Donald?) and he'd do ok in most aspects too, but won't amount to much. It's almost like they specifically train for the sport they play, which makes them really good at it.

Because they know how ruthless the cuts are over there, that culture doesn't exist over here. Plus for all the similarities it is a different game-most here grew up loving Rugby, played it at school, university, on the weekends in leagues etc & don't want to haul their families over the pond, then never get a start or get an injury & get cut.

Yea, I'd agree with that. I'm no expert on rugby by any stretch of the imagination, but I imagine the positions and typical responsibilities are much closer to each other than in football (i.e. slot receiver vs ILB).

Rugby is pretty big in Ireland, but I always preferred Hurling. Its fast paced as fuk takes more skill.

That's not even an NFL player. River monsters are some lime 3rd rate arena league.

Rugby is cool, but there have been plenty of rugby players who have tried/made the switch to NFL. Every single one of them confirms that the athletes are bigger strong and faster in nfl and the hits are much harder.

Nfl sucks too..just a 3.5 hr truck and dick pill commercial.


Also 24.2 is fastest rugby speed ever recorded. Track events don't count. All those nfl guys can also hit 24 mph without the pads they are wearing in game.


You're also using 1 season of nfl data to compare to the entire history of rugby and using track numbers on top of that.

Cannot really find anything concrete about it-most of the stories say he turned an offer down as he was dedicated to playing for New Zealand. Also that the Denver Broncos offered him a big deal later on in 2003, but at that point the Kidney disease had left him in a bad way & pushing 30 it would have been a waste of time like Lesnar. If he did go there in the mid 1990's & busted by practice players it wouldn't be surprising as he had never played the game in NZ.

Just like no NFL player would go to New Zealand & be able to do anything against the All Black reserves. Or a Baseball player going to play Cricket there & getting put on his ass by the net bowlers.

I played rugby at college and played against North Sydney for the New Orleans men side when they toured the US- I made the Deep South All Star squad and the All East Developmental squad.

NFL is harder, period. I am neighbors with a retired NFL player who wasn't even considered good and his athleticism is unreal.

they are two very different sports despite strong superficial similarities.

NFL is a hyper-specialized single position anaerobic sport.
Rugby is a generally all around sport with significant aerobic requirements.
