Yeah. No idea what it cost back then. The nepotism runs deep up there, because of his grandfather. My brother in law has a bullsheit degree (smart guy though) and was given an administrative job at Harvard many years ago. He comes with my sister to visit a couple times a year and doesn't have to take time off. I see him on his Ipad a couple hours a day and that's his work day, making I believe north of $150K a year. Not a bad life. Cake job, nice salary, pension, shared vacation home on Martha's Vineyard. All because his grandfather was a high ranking official around the time I was born, who likely got the property for a song and dance practically.

We spent a week at his parents' AirBnB rental home on the coast (not Martha's Vineyard, another nice sleepy area) for free, while they usually rent it for about $3000 a week at that time of year. Connections are the point of Ivy League schools. Heck I bet so long as any of my kids have solid grades and just a ~1300 SAT score they can get accepted to Harvard. Never underestimate nepotism.

I always wonder what people do in those giant houses.

Do they just sit in giant open rooms all alone or walk around other empty rooms and look at them just because they own them?

Seems you would eventually get bored of that and hang out in a smaller and smaller more cozy type area and just ignore the rest of the house.

These days a lot of them are owned by property speculators / investors.

There was a time, in many of the 'mansion' type neighborhoods, where the houses were filled with kids. Extended family may have lived there for some time too.

With a plummeting birth rate, especially among the folks who can afford these places, they simply become another investment vehicle.

It happens in the Hamptons too. A friend divorced and had to sell off his share of a place there, he and his wife didn't want kids. Empty but beautiful places. Soulless, though - the neighborhood.

Depends on how the house is built. Mine is based around a great hall, with all rooms coming off it. The great hall is double height, with a mezzanine that all the upstairs rooms come off.

The gym and the pool are in their own wing, but everything else in the house comes off that central space, making it feel close/connected.

Million dollar homes are typically overrated. Ugly cookie cutter design. Ugly boring neighborhood.

Unless it's sitting near the beach, lake, or mountains, a house isn't worth millions.

If I'm rich, I'm spending no more than $500k and calling it a day. A $500k home gives you everything you could want.

Why would you want a big house in an ugly place with chit tier weather anyways?

At least if you're going to seclude yourself like that, go somewhere warm. By a nice beach, beautiful mountains, etc

Where can you find a decent house in a safe neighborhood for $1 million any more? Not in the desirable parts of the country, that's for sure.

You must have missed the Martha Vineyard news last week. Biden declared Martha's Vineyard a low income community ~

You Can’t Make This Up: Biden Regime Designates Martha’s Vineyard as “Low-Income” Community to Qualify for Federal EV Charger Tax Credits

https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/202...me-designates/

In an unexpected twist to the Biden regime’s environmental policy, affluent areas, including Martha’s Vineyard, Montauk, and parts of Nantucket, have been designated as “low-income” communities, making them eligible for federal tax credits for electric vehicle (EV) charger installations, Daily Caller reported.

As part of its efforts to encourage the adoption of EVs, the administration has extended a subsidy program, which was initially targeted at increasing access to EV chargers in underserved communities.

The White House recently announced the initiative, promising “up to 30% off the cost of the charger to individuals and businesses in low-income communities and non-urban areas.”

“The Department of Treasury and the Department of Energy are releasing intended definitions for eligible census tracts that will confirm that the Inflation Reduction Act’s 30C EV charging tax credit is available to approximately two-thirds of Americans. This tax credit provides up to 30% off the cost of the charger to individuals and businesses in low-income communities and non-urban areas, making it more affordable to install EV charging infrastructure and increasing access to EV charging in underserved communities,” the White House announced last month.....

#1 way to get rich in America is being a SUCCESSFUL business owner. I know so many dudes with not a ton of talent who simply started a service based business, worked their ass off, and grew it into a machine with a few employees. If you want to hit that 10-20 million dollar net worth, become a provider of plumbing, electric, lawncare, etc. Offer elite services to people who are both wealthy, and uninterested in doing the tasks themselves. You will never get rich working for a salary... business owners famously pay very little in tax due to smart accounting practices and the ability to write off virtually anything they can justify meaning they pay a very insignificant tax. Warren Buffet stated that his secretary pays more tax than he does.

They don't teach anything of use in school to independent thinkers past grade 8... schools are there to breed slaves...cogs in the wheel. When you find a way to break out of that, you will find ways to wealth.

You pretty much have to own a business to have a high income. In order to become extremely wealthy you're talking about owning a massive business or multiple businesses for a long time.

I have a childhood friend that has a 'small' business and he makes an average of 3 million per year. So roughly about 250K per month. He is not 'wealthy.' He cannot go buy a home in Martha's Vineyard. I'd say he is more 'upper middle class'.

Yes 3 mil a yard is enough to live comfortably anywhere in the US. But he's still not really that rich. He's still very much so a working man logging 60 hours per week.

LOL these people are not working "hourly" jobs. Even a high performing physician or lawyer diligently saving and investing over a long career might only hit 15-20M or so max and that's with some good luck along the way. These people most likely started or otherwise own successful businesses or are truly high earnings (CEO/celebrities/athletes etc) or inherited.

To carry a $10M house would cost roughly 500-600K/yr real cost. You'd want that to be less than 1/3 of your income so say $2M annual income at least. Alternatively, net worth 50M+.

The median age in martha's vineyard is 53. How old is your friend? If, for example, he is making 3M per year in his 30's, think about what kind of property he could afford by 53.

I didn't buy an expensive property until 45. Unless you sign a NBA contract in your 20s or became a music/movie star, it takes time for a business to grow and money to accumulate, hence an average age of 53 in martha's vineyard.

A successful business, sure. Working 60 hours a week for 3 million (net, based on your post) puts his total gross income significantly higher (depending on his tax jurisdiction).

Based on '89', you're an 89 kid, so your friend is what, 35 or so? 3 million a year (net) by 35 is doing very, very well. He doesn't need to be 'rich' today; if he uses that money and guides his business correctly he could - in this lifetime - approximate generational wealth.

Buying a house you won't really live in (per my previous post) for 15 million dollars isn't exactly a wise investment for people trying to hustle up the socioeconomic ladder in one lifetime. Unless it's a property to flip - take a look at NYC for a detailed case study on empty properties, sat on for years to flip.
