Depends on various factors-they will be trying different antibiotics first, if nothing works then they have to look at removing the infected area or areas as a last resort.

This is why i've never been a big fan of "roughing it" going off grid. All it takes is one freak accident/infectious disease and your LARP as a 19th century settler is all up in smoke.

Necrotising Fasciitis is no joke, and you can basically get it from anything. if you have an open wound (even something harmless like an ingrown fingernail) and you're tending a garden or chopping wood and ESPECIALLY cleaning up after farm animals, there's a pretty good chance something is going to get into that wound if you don't have gloves. Hell, it may not be N. Fasciitis, it can Be Staph. A which can be just as dangerous if left untreated.

and OP, make sure he's on either Daptomycin or Primaxin. If they've got him on clindamycin, suggest something else that chit is too mild.

I know how you feel man. I have a family member who this happened to on Monday. They had a procedure recently and the incision wasn’t properly cleaned. Next thing you know it’s septic, and they were put on a ventilator, with organ failure. Not looking good at all and seemingly only divine intervention will save them at this point.

Enjoy the time you have with those you love and care about while they’re here. You truly don’t know how much time you have when it’s all said and done…

ok so reason for the chamber was to do whatever they could until he could go into surgery. he was in surgery, then examined in the evening, now back in chamber and will have more surgery tomorrow.

doctors are optimistic but nowhere near safe yet

bit of a wakeup call about how fragile life really is.

crazy how this progresses so fast, and that fast you get to the stage of potential amputation or death
This was one of my fears when I thought about picking up BJJ. Open wounds and rubbing up against people is a recipe for disaster. Muay thai is safer but you can probably also get it from open cut and dirty equipment

having serious issues processing this. any prayers appreciated.
not that it matters now but
1) how did he get the cut? (standing water, dirt, etc.) and
2) was it something he complained about the past 2 weeks?

NF is not a good thing to have. Best of luck.

One of my friends from middle/hs days just got shot and killed at 7am on a SATURDAY trying to open up his family bakery which has been in business for 20 years. He had a wife and two small kids, woke up in the morning ready to hussle to provide for his family and a guy who wanted $50 apprached him and asked for money, he complied gave to him and still got shot to death.

once again thx for all the prayers

update: he's had two surgeries now, with comperession chambers in between. it's all on the inner side of his calf. they removed 1 inch x 16 inches x 6 inches of skin and subq layer. Absolutely insane amount of skin.

they believe they got it all, but no guarantees until they stop the IV antibiotics.

continued treatment will be the next 10 days, then he'll have multiple months of skin grafts and such ahead of him. if they have to remove more it will be muscle too and they'll have to harvest muscle from his thigh and lower back. he was literally perfectly fine just 3 days ago.

Glad to hear that he's doing better than expected. Has he been extubated yet, or does he still have the tube in?

The sooner they can get him extubated, the better his outcome. Hopefully if it hasn't been yet, it will be soon.
