I'm not a UFC/mma fan but even I recognize that thewayfights tend to play out now are very different from back in the day. Those smaller dudes back in the day beating bigger dudes were fighting with much greater (imo) disparities in skill than what exists nowadays.

Back then it was like 'one of the absolute best grapplers/relatively unknown martial-arts style practitioners against a really big dude who punches things a lot!!!'

Nowadays it's like "super-elite grappler who punches really well fighting almost-super elite grappler who punches sort of like pro-boxing athletes". The disparities aren't as great. For this reason, size/strength becomes more important of a factor than it used to be.

Just my observation/opinion as someone who doesn't really pay much attention and therefore maybe a 'forest for the trees' sort of thing applies...

The Gracie thing doesn’t matter as much in today’s MMA. Once people realized ground skill was a thing, almost every single MMA fighter is more than competent in some version of it, mainly BJJ. Also that was UFC 1 I think, where the participants weren’t exactly the cream of the crop.

UFC fighters now are the top of the top. Lesser fighters go to smaller leagues like PFL, but without weight classes could you imagine letting Conor in there against Stiepe or Bones Jones?

He fought dudes that were like 400lbs lol

I mean thats like saying will Jordan dominate today. Who knows, he would be a different fighter than back then with the advances in training and nutrition.

plus everyone he fought was roided up back then.

He beat ufc legend Shamrock too who is juiced and jacked.

off course I dont know how it translates today but I could see some welterweights beating some HWs
