had a 20 inch Stihl chainsaw bind and kick back when I was young. Would not go near one ever again.

I can't think of a tool I won't use - I respect them but like chainsaws never bothered me.

What I absolutely won't get involved in is garage door springs. Forget it.

At work, it took hours of safety meetings, having to source one that would even be ALLOWED at the factory (had to be an anti-kickback model), because there are SO many injuries from those things. [a contractor needed one to complete their job, and no other tool would do, so we had to research if it was even possible to safely allow one on campus]




Find an anti-kickback one, and itll be a little bit safer.


Yes yes, I know, all the "tough dudes" will come here and tell us how they grind naked, upsidedown, without a guard, using only their safety squints, etc etc. Don't care. Watch the videos of accidents, and pics from deaths and injuries. Plus the thousands of wheels stuck in people's goggles / faces... Thats one tool you don't fuk around with (along with a chainsaw)

I framed when I was younger and a lot of times we would take the 2 x 4, hold it and push down on our shin / boot and cut it. I can't find a picture online. So basically we would cut holding the lumber. No big deal if you know what you are doing.

Agree on table saws, much prefer the radial arm saw or a miter.

Table saw

Any form of router. Table routers kick back like a mother and one slip with one of the larger hand routers and it's spinny circle cutter to the gut/thigh/penor.

I legit get nervous every time I switch on a table saw. Those things can do so much damage in such a short amount of time.

Never used one, but I'm sure planers would scare me too if I used them. My dad cut his thumb bad with one and my old shop teacher lost a finger because of them.

You seen the Russian lathe incident?
When I was in college, I was using dividers to measure while the part was still spinning. I was really concentrating on the measurement, and when I looked out of the corner of my eye, the dog was spinning about an inch from my head.

The NC lathe had a big dent in the door from when the chuck came apart.

A lot of the time, it's not the tool, but what I'm working on. Current job is pretty much all 24V, but at my last job we did a lot of medium voltage (up to 13,800V) work. Got to watch my hand disappear inside a 480V arc flash fireball.

Wood chipper. Wouldn’t get near one. I known of a couple of people over the years who got sucked into one and diced. Can’t imagine a worse way to go really.

You bring back memories of a guy from a TransAm forum . He was under his TA grinding stuff off the frame , when it hit something and got loose from his hands . Because it was electric it took forever to slow down and cut through the muscle and tendons in his arm all the way down to the bone .
Dam near puked when I seen the pic .
I’m more of a fan of air powered angle grinders for what he was doing , as when you let go it stops nearly instantaneously .
I actually have a bunch of air tools but don’t have a big enough compressor to run them

sawstop works OK for amputation injuries but does nothing for kickback. I use a sliding table saw which allows me to secure the work and keep my hands well clear of the blade. With that and a proper riving knife the table saw is pretty safe

I have a full on metal shop with a lathe, Bridgeport milling machine, slip roller, hydraulic press, 7 metal cutting saws, a dozen grinders, MIG welder, TIG welder, etc. The most dangerous tool kind of a tie between the grinder and the metal lathe.

I teach tool classes to some people I work with and tell them that the tool that will most frequently hurt you is the grinder. The tool that will kill you is the lathe.


I have had plenty of cuts and even metal shavings removed from my eye from the grinder. I have had metal in my eye even while wearing eye protection. It bounced off my cheek and into my eye.
Yeah, I'm old, been here for years before posting. Son posts as well.

Had a tree fall on the fence and a neighbor complained so i had to rent an angle grinder, remove the metal posts and metal fence and have a metal recycler pick it all up.
The sparks were uncomfortable, but it wasn't that scary when forced by the county.
