Death in Midsummer & Other Stories - Mishima Yukio – 8/10

So this is far and away my favorite author of all time, and once again this did not disappoint. After reading the boring long-winded Invisible Man, I immediately felt much better opening this book. Something about the way Mishima writes in his precision of detail that is immaculate and complex yet simple as well, really is pleasant to read. There's nothing groundbreaking or radically different about these stories but they dive into how the Eastern (Japanese) mind works when dealing with situations, which is much different than how the Western mind works. These stories range from the life of geishas, superstitions, seppuku (ritual suicide), (traditional) death, among other things.

The best thing I have ever read from any author is a tetralogy of books called the "Sea of Fertility" which Mishima finished writing before overthrowing a military base in Tokyo and committing seppuku in 1970, in protest to Japan becoming more Westernized. Mishima's legacy would be stated as one of Japan's most prolific writers of the 20th century.

Though this may not be the best thing I've read from Mishima, and he is somewhat of an acquired taste, I will say that his writing truly is beautiful done and hold a brilliant symmetry to it that can't be denied. Interesting enough while searching for book reviews on YouTube I came across this from Pewdiepie (which I'm not a fan) which sums up what I've been saying about the author perfectly.

29. The Bachman books - Stephen King

I could class this as 4 books, but I will just class it as one.

Rage - about a killer student who takes over his classroom and liaises with Police and School Principal
The Long Walk - A annual contest in which 100 teenage boys gather for an elimination endurance walk, whereby dropping out is final.
Roadwork - A laundrette employee takes up issue with local council over a planned road extention and the effect it will have on him personally.
The Running Man - Set in the 2020s, a man enters a twisted game show whereby he is tracked by a squad of hunters. NB The Arnold movie is almost nothing like the book. The book details a lengthy struggle and long track across different states rather than a few guys running around an arena getting confronted by big stocky guys wearing funny outfits. Plus, in the book Richards is a scrawny wagecel who enters willingly in a bid to win the contest money, he is not a muscle-bound ex military hardass drafted in against his will.

So not really horror, but more intense and often harrowing looks into the lives of people in difficult and trying situations, whether physical, mental or both. A worthy read over all.

Got in real late on it this year but getting amped up for 2022. I spend anywhere from 4-7 hours a day in my truck so I’m able to knock out audiobooks from my library.

The Road - Cormac McCarthy – 8/10

Now I know I'm late for reading this one and many of you here have read this a while ago. I've seen a lot of reviews/recommendations for this, some of which is good some bad. I was always under the impression that this book was going to be either shocking or controversial, but I found neither to be true. I even thought that the ending was going to go as far as mess me up or something (like LSD or shrooms did in my teenage years lol). Instead of the getting a really high bar set from the reviews of those who have read this, I still found this to be a great gritty apocalyptic story.

The Road is about a father and son who are drifters looking for food and shelter in order to survive while heading south and to the ocean. A lot of people have perished along the way on the road under the harsh circumstances of a lack of resources and the cutthroat mentality from other people on the road. This reminds me of some type of zombie apocalypse type of world (sans the zombies) where the main goal is survival.

What I don't like is that the story tends to drag a bit and becomes repetitive, which seems especially true with the dialogue between the father and the son. I think the author might have made the communication really basic on purpose though which makes sense. After a while there probably isn't too much to talk about and the boy is pretty young. If anything it kind of adds to the story's gloominess, which pretty much is going to be throughout the entire duration of the book.

Yeah I did like reading the Road overall despite the choppy dialogue. I just downloaded Blood Meridian from zLibrary a few days ago. I will go download Outer Dark as well now.

Landed in the hospital with appendicitis followed by surgery. It was not the most fun thing, but it did provide me with ample time to catch up on my reading.

[24] Orphan X by Gregg Hurwitz - 5/5
I finally understand why this was all the rage in this topic. And I have no clue why I did not pick it up earlier. What a thrilling read. The nurse recommended I pick up another book as she caught me reading this till late in the night two days in a row. The level of detail, the way the writing draws you into the story, and the thrilling turn of events. It had it all for me. Looking forward to the next books, but will take a few weeks to ensure I enjoy them to the fullest.

[25] The Eight Mountains by Paolo Cognetti - 3/5
As an alpine enthusiast, I would've thought this was going to be great, but I was a bit disappointed. The story progressed very slow and at times I had to wrestle myself through it, but the last half was quite enjoyable.

[26] The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris - 4/5
It's always nice when a book lives up to the hype. It's a fiction book, but with a great level of detail and provides an insight into camp life from a privileged perspective. The book follows a Jew that is put to work as a tattooist, putting all the numbers on the arms of new arrivals. The true horrors of the camp remain hidden in this book, but that makes for some (relatively) lighter reading. Truly enjoyed it.

[27] Make Your Bed: A Daily Journal by William McRaven - 3/5
Halfway in I was wondering why this all sounded so familiar. Found out it was a reread which somehow got listed wrong in my library. Nevertheless, this is one of the self-help books that doesn't fill the book with nonsense just to get to a certain page count. The experiences he describes to substantiate his lessons are great and his attitude is ammendable. A solid read, but there is nothing I will do differently tomorrow after reading this.

[28] Bloog Song (Raven's Shadow #1) by Anthony Ryan - 5/5
One of my favorite fantasy books. Although it is one of my favorites, I never bothered to pick up the second and third book as many people online advised against it and I didn't want to spoil my fond memories. However, recently a couple of friends did proceed with the rest of the trilogy and recommended me to do the same. So that's what I'm going to do and that provided a good excuse to reread this one. I love the writing, I love the world and I love the characters. Seeing this into a GoT like series would be the best thing ever. Now on to the second book with my fingers crossed.

I'm legit surprised you haven't read Blood Meridian. Of the three I've read (that, The Road, No Country) it was definitely the best.

Check out McCarthy's books Child of God and Outer Dark. I thought they were really good. I can't remember exactly how I rated them, but I know that they were at least close to The Road for me.

I started Blood Meridian a while back and never finished it. Considering I like his other stuff, I probably just need to get enough sleep to really focus on the writing better and give it another try.

30. The Da Vinci Code - Dan Brown

Finally got round to reading this novel. I read 'The Lost Symbol' back in 2013. I find I can learn a lot from Dan Brown's novels with regards to symbology, iconography, religion, culture, world history, secret societies. Brown suceeds in keeping the novel interesting and the reader eager to know what happens next.

I just finished Jurassic Park.... I think I saw another miscer in here post it on his list and I was like, "meh, I'll try it" then I did the kindle sample, and loved it, so bought the full book.

This is probably the first fiction book I've finished as an adult LOL.

would seriously recommend, although I don't think I can "rate" it because it's WAY outside of the type of book I normally read.

If you're interested in more "smart action sci-fi" hit me up. Agree with Payton that you cant go wrong with most of Crichton's stuff though, he's a good writer.

Stephenson's still better tho.

Devil in the White City - Erik Larson – 9/10

So I already knew about H H Holmes before I started reading this, because I watch a lot of crime shows, but not to the extent that I know of what he actually did until now. I didn't know about the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago as much. This book is simply amazing, and the author provided an enormous amount of information that details exactly what it felt like to be in this time period.

Daniel Burnham is the man, or better the architect, given only a few years time to design a Fair and create something on par with the Paris World's Fair (a few years prior) which brought the world the iconic Eiffel Tower. This is a huge undertaking to spotlight the city of Chicago on the world's stage, and failure would be an extremely embarrassing unacceptable event. Meanwhile, a cunning and charming sociopath is killing people in his hotel while the city celebrates and is getting away with it.

It's amazing to see how many ideas have been inspired by the Fair and how the people who were involved reshaped history because of it. Really a lot of good research went into this book and overall it was really interesting story.

Also as a side note, this too will be made into a mini series which will star Leonardo Dicaprio sometime after Killers of the Flower Moon movie is made in early 2022.

Finally finished the challenge this year. I had periods of time where I was struggling to read but a lot of that was the book in hand.

The last book by RW Krpoun ended up being an interesting one. It is the beginning of a typical swords and sorcery epic quest but is told from the point of view of a half orc/half human slave/bodyguard. Grog is his name and he was a pit fighter with over 60 fights to the death. Grog lived a limited existence and comes across as somewhat autistic.
