Ah ****! I meant to include congratulations on the two weeks in my last post, but I forgot. Not to use it as an excuse, but I was wrapped up in my feelings last evening and my brain was not working as well as usual! I apologizeThat's a great milestone!

I have had that feeling many times. It’s basically a panic attack, or at least that’s what it sounds like you may have had. That impending sense of doom and like you have to escape, like you’re about to die. It’s a totally irrational fear coming from deep within your brain, it’s like your subconscious is trying to communicate something to your conscious mind.

Maybe it could be something as simple as the change in your living situation. Maybe you feel fearful about getting sick again. Maybe you are worried about finances. These are all things that most people worry about pretty frequently, of course. Only problem is, some people’s fight-or-flight response overreacts to something that isn’t life-threatening in a way that your conscious brain perceived as an imminent life-threatening danger.

My go-to was always alcohol because it immediately cures that feeling for me. The only problem is that it just comes back, it’s like injecting a numbing agent into an infected limb…the pain goes away, but the infection rages on and when the feeling comes back, the pain is worse than before.

Anxiety is a struggle but I find exercise to be probably the best and most effective way to mitigate it.

I’m glad you got that booch and some sliders instead of beer. Your body and mind was very happy to get that instead of filling it with poisonous garbage.

In other news, I went to a gym for the first time in 9 years yesterday. Chest and lats feel strong because of all the dips and pull-ups I’ve been doing, but my shoulder press is weak as a baby. And my legs don’t feel “weak”, but unracking 135 on the bar definitely felt like something I haven’t experienced in a while.

Pathetic! My new goal is to get my squat and shoulder press up. Gotta work on those weaknesses!

I also did some depth jumps, box jumps. I am able to move pretty well with the running and sprinting I’ve been doing. Decent explosiveness.

Lots of equipment and a pool too. I’m excited. Got a free 3-day pass but will buy a membership tomorrow. Gonna go back today but not sure what I wanna work on.

Lats, biceps, chest definitely feeling strong but shoulders, triceps weak as a baby. Probably just gonna take a few weeks to reaccustom myself to the movements.
I think it has been the new room mate mostly. That's awesome that you're stepping back into the gym after nine years! I have experienced that initial reentry into the gym after a long time and it's frustrating, discouraging, and even kinda embarrassing to not be lifting nearly as much as you used to. But the strength will come quickly! Focus on breaking PR after PR day in and day out! I have gone from squatting with just the bar on a smith machine for 10 reps to 45lb plates on each side for 10 reps. I know that's not a lot lol but considering that a bit over three years ago I couldn't walk because of my nerve damage, so I am grateful to be able to squat at all!

I am gonna be having some oatmeal and yogurt for breakfast and then hitting the gym for arm day! I need to bike down to the grocery store to buy a few things to complete my bonus offer on Ibotta lol. I think I just need one offer to get the $7 bonus. I will probably get some Go-gurt because several of the apps I use have it as a cash back offer and I can get almost the full value back as cash lol. I'm grateful for the many ways to make small bits of money that allow me to get by while keeping an open schedule to focus on my recovery. I'm very grateful for the clarity and ability to do things like this as a result of my recovery!! I am considering treating myself to a really nice dinner as a reward for working out this whole week and staying on top of my self care as well as posting on here more often. I really appreciate all of you, especially when you share your struggles and challenges! I know it's not easy to share our more difficult times, but I believe that sharing is the most beneficial to others!

What are you guys up to for today? Hopefully you have some good plans to finish the weekend off strong!

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference, living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; taking this world as it is and not as I would have it; trusting that You will make all things right if I surrender to Your will; so that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with You forever in the next.

Amen.

To be honest I didn’t find it funny. I was actually devastated, srs. That’s probably pretty stupid of me. Well whatever, I’m just glad you are good.

No worries bro, but not gonna lie I really believed you. Given how you haven’t been feeling well and then almost broke your sobriety by drinking, you really got me!

Anyway keep making vids but don’t do that again please, srs. I kind of don’t find it funny to joke about and I’m surprised you would joke about it tbh.

Anyway that’s all I’ll say about it, just being honest.

I sincerely appreciate you letting me know. I didn't really think that my actions would have that sort of impact, but I can understand why. Extremely tone deaf and irresponsible on my part given the seriousness of the topic. I do plan on making more videos and I definitely won't be doing something like this again

Joey can you describe the good workout you had in more detail? What do you think made you have such a good workout?

Part of it was that I felt more in tune with my body, specifically my muscles. Now that my brain has been getting more clarity and lucidity from not abusing substances, I have a much better brain-muscle connection. Like, I can better feel each muscle group during my sets. Also, now that my brain is reaching more of a normal homeostasis without the substances, working out and powering through sets has been giving me a high. I can better appreciate the dopamine and endorphins from exercise (or dopamine from a good meal, etc) because my brain doesn't compare it to that spike while getting high.

I wish I could explain and articulate it better. I just feel much more aligned with myself on a physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual level. I get much more joy out of life and it is nostalgic of how I lived life before I started abusing substances.

How about yourself? Have you been experiencing a similar thing? Not just with working out, but life in general!

Thanks Joey!!!! Glad you are going strong, it’s inspirational

One good thing about quitting so far is I’ve started cooking a little again.

Previously I’d just get restaurant food literally every night. Bad for me as well as my wallet.

Just done stuff like homemade burgers, sugar free Greek yogurt with frozen berries, but it’s cheaper and a lot better for me

No problem! And I appreciate you sharing that, I’m glad I can provide some sort of inspiration! That’s awesome that you’ve started getting back into cooking. It can be a really fun and creative hobby in which you can enjoy good food afterwards, a win win lol. You should post some pics of your cooking on here!

Burgers sound good as well as that Greek yogurt; I’ve never added additional fruit to my yogurt, I’ll have to try that. Or I suppose you might use plain Greek yogurt and then add stuff. I just buy the Greek yogurt with **** in it lol.

One of the house mates brought home some southwestern Mac and cheese from work last night. This is the leftovers, so the pic doesn’t do it justice. It is hella good!

Just called in a sick day. Insomnia striking hard tonight. Went to bed and was going to get around 6.5 hours, but woke up and can’t go back to sleep, would’ve only been like 3.5 hours of sleep

Yum!!! Love some good Mac and cheese. Yea, I use plain Greek yogurt, add some frozen berries and sometimes chopped walnuts!

Excellent job guys!

Don't forget, you aren't giving up anything that adds anything positive to your lives.

Once I realized and meditated on the life and energy and positivity and a hundred other things that I've gained since stopping, I've been able to stay mostly in peace and content with my sober identity.

Everyone's different, but for me realizing I'm not missing out on anything positive by not drinking had the biggest influence in me not fighting my own mind anymore.

Congrats! And nice work! While I am not a huge fan of AA or doing the 12 steps, there definitely is a lot of good knowledge and insight that you can use in your recovery. I like the idea of taking a moral inventory and trying to make ammends! You should definitely keep going to the meetings if they are helpful to you. Also, a sponsor might not be a bad idea and they can help you work through the steps if that's something you're interested in.

Hell yeah we are and I agree, it's super awesome to see everyone doing well. Same for you! How's the gym treating ya? I do believe you said you just started getting back in the gym?

I agree 100%, great advice! Sometimes our brains are really good at convincing ourselves that alcohol and other substances were a positive thing lol.

I'm doing pretty well today myself. Still feeling a bit trapped and lacking a zest for life, but I think as I adjust to sharing a bedroom again I will feel better. Or, it would be especially awesome if they give us the thumbs up to move rooms around and then I will have my own bedroom. Which would be nice because then I could put my memory foam queen bed in as well as get a desk so I'm not sitting on the floor when I use my computer lol.

I had a pretty good back workout today and no pain in my arm which is fantastic! I still plan on lifting a bit lighter for the next week just to make sure and then ease into it. I also had a good bike ride and a good grocery haul, so I was inspired to make another video. I like to remind myself that we are incredibly resilient! We are able to adapt and overcome obstacles, even when it seems like we can't!!

I just took a shower and now gonna make me a bunch of scrambled eggs and then have a few bowls of rice krispies for dessert lol.

Fell off after my last post but proud to say I’ve not had one drop of alcohol in July, and I was on vacation a week ago. Last time I was on vacation I spent half of it drunk. Don’t even feel like drinking right now. I have been eating like crap though to replace the booze so need to do better there but still feels good man.

21 days complete. This past week I felt atrocious (anxiety, terrible lack of sleep, depression), but woke up yesterday feeling great.

Have only gone 3 weeks several times the last 6ish years.

Very good bro, nicely done srs. You keep feeling better and better. Also even though it’s difficult to get to sleep right now, you’re probably getting more restful sleep even though you aren’t “sleeping” as long as when you are blasted.

It does get easier and easier though. Have you tried anything like melatonin or 5-HTP or anything like that?

Next step is 22 days. Then 4 weeks. Then 4 months. Etc.

Thanks boyo. And started making other positive changes too, don’t think it’d be possible if I was still drinking.

Been more consistent with my low intensity cardio…. And got a lactate meter and tested it the other day, big improvements in the last year, I think part of it is because alcohol prevents fat oxidation so I was spinning my wheels

Eating out a lot less and cooking more…. Eating more protein and less sugar,

My face looks less “puffy” too.

I did pick up some melatonin on Friday, it does help!

Got ultrasound results back. No cancer or ascites so that’s about as good as I can be. Just has to stay that way. Fukin depressing as fuk. Still can’t believe I did this. Well nothing matters anyway and people die all the time, so I shouldn’t be such a pussy about it.

Nice work! I found traveling to be hard when I quit... long layover at the airport, so tempting to hop into a barstool and grab a drink....

So your health is overall pretty good and you're depressed? Why, just because you had to go through a bunch of tests?

You're making all kinds of strength gains and I believe you are working hard to live a better life overall. It's your chance to shine now.

Nice work on not drinking this whole month! Thanks for coming back and keeping us updated! It does feel good man when you start making good progress in sobriety and you can enjoy activities more than when you were drinking or had to drink to make it "fun".

**** yeah on the three weeks! Nice! Keep pushing through those not so good days and enjoy the better days where you can truly appreciate your sobriety.

Congrats on the good news! I disagree with you though; you are entitled to feel the way you do and not have to minimize your feelings. I hope that you have been able to truly sit with your feelings and just experience them instead of trying to numb or run from the feelings with alcohol. I can relate to the feelings of depression in terms of the devastation of our addiction and trying to pick up the pieces. It's really hard to come to accept the destructive behaviors of our past, but I believe it is a necessary step in healing and moving forward.

Good Morning everybody,

Figured it was time to get my life back together. Going for my first month without a drink in as long as I can remember and back into the gym.

I put on a lot of wait during covid and never quite shifted it. Had someo health problems, lost my job and my marriage.

Taken a long time to recover and bottled a lot of it up. Hoping this time I can rebuild my life.
