I don't think FC SO is issued the 4506. That's the California Highway Patrol that does. Only reason I know is my dad is retired CHP.

If you just listen to your Travis Haleys, your Pat Macs, your Proctors, etc and get out and shoot; you'll continue to get better. I think that someone can improve at a steady rate by spending just about 2 hours/month at the range. You can train at a good rate and use only about 100rds pistol ammo/hour. In my experience, shooting about 5-10 hours/month is a really good rate.

I highly recommend to work towards getting into some type of competitive shooting like USPSA or 3 gun (or both). First of all, it's a lot of fun and second I have learned a lot through putting my own time in and also learning from the competitive shooters. The "competitive shooters" know a lot in how to shoot well, I contrast that to the "tactical world" of training from Haley and McNamara. Haley and McNamara are awesome and the "tactical world" definitely has its value but there's also a lot of good to learn from the "competitive" side of things. Proctor is/was a GM in USPSA and so he has a lot of good training on both sides of the ball.

Here's a big ass TLDR story of my pistol learning journey.

I bought my first firearm right after thanksgiving 2012, it was a Glock 19. I was fortunate to have a coworker at the time that was a solid shooter and knew a lot about the firearms industry and knew quality brands/products/etc. He had recommended the G19.

I put about 300 rounds through the G19 in the next few months, I sucked. Before that, I had shot a handgun probably only 2 or 3 times.

In about April of 2013 I went out to the desert to shoot with my aforementioned colleague. This colleague had taken classes from Frank Proctor beforehand and knew a lot of what Frank teaches. Colleague also knew a lot about Pat Mac and Haley as well (I don't think he ever took classes from them though). So from the get-go I learned some solid fundamentals and had a good foundation.

I still remember being out in the desert shooting with him and shooting at a 10"x10" square steel target from about 7 yards away. I was shooting at a cadence of about 1 round per 3 seconds. In 10 rounds fired I could only hit it about 3 times lmao.

From April 2013 - May 2014 my aforementioned colleague left the company and I lost contact with him, so I just read stuff here in the MFC and mostly just "listened to" (read/watch) Haley, McNamara, and Proctor. During this time frame I shot probably about 750-1000 rounds. I then bought a G17 in May 2014.

In July 2014 I started trying to work on draw stroke technique and speed. I remember initially being able to draw from OWB holster and hit a 10"x12" steel target at 7 yards in about 2.25 seconds. Between July 2014 - Aug 2014 I spent probably about 10 hours and 1000 rounds working on draw stroke and other drills. By the end of Aug 2014 I remember being so happy getting that draw stroke down to about 1.5 seconds. In hindsight, looking back, I remember that I was basically just point shooting; I wasn't really picking up my sights, noob.

Sep 2014 - Jan 2015 I probably only shot about 100 rounds, idk why.

Feb 2015 is when I really focused on getting better at shooting. I was going out to the desert to shoot basically 4 times/month, about 12 hours month total. I was going through about 1000 rounds of 9mm/month. I kept this up until the beginning of June 2015.

I wasn't really keeping track of any bench marks, but I felt that I definitely improved. I started working more reload drills, worked on better draw stroke (and faster), worked on movement, etc. I just did what I knew at the time, tried working hard at it. I do remember getting to the point where my draw (and fire) time on that same 10x12inch target from 7 yards would be a consistent 1.25 seconds +/- .1 second and that was WITH actually picking up my sights and knowing where the shot would be. If I wanted to burn it down and (falsely) feel good about myself, I would just point shoot and consistently get between .85 - 1.00 second (kind of stupid to do but it is fun).

I still will point shoot from time to time, mostly when I know I have a good chance to be able to hit the target. It's a bad habit though, need to slow it down. In this video you can see that I am just point shooting at the square targets (because they're ****ing huge), however I am picking up my sights on the plate racks; except for the final 2 plates lol.



At the beginning of June 2015 I wrecked my car and totalled it so I only had a motorcycle to ride. I couldn't really bring my stuff out to shoot in the desert any more and I had never been to a shooting range... idk why I never did I think it's because I thought I'd never be able to draw from a holster and shoot from them so I didn't see the point of going. Any ways, I didn't shoot much from June 2015 - Aug 2015.

I got about 5-6 hours of shooting in between Sep 2015 and Dec 2015, then at the beginning of Dec 2015 I received my first "formal" training/instruction which was from Travis Haley's D5 handgun class. This was an awesome class, it was a great experience, I learned a lot. Most of the fundamentals that they taught I had already picked up from reading/watching/etc their stuff and others'.

The D5 handgun class was a nice way to gauge myself where I was at. I still have a very long way to go, but it was a good validation of the direction I was heading. I really want to take more classes from Haley, he's a super cool guy. He's one of my heroes, I probably sound like a little kid saying that but idgaf I'm not scared to express my convictions/feelings/compliment people lol. He's a very inspirational guy to me.

In Jan 2016 I took a pistol and carbine class from Proctor. Proctor is a great instructor and a very nice guy, he's a pretty low key dude. I liked the class a lot, I learned a lot.



In Feb 2016 I started shooting at a local range's weekly steel match and also started shooting USPSA matches. Feb 2016 - May 2016 I was spending about 4 hours/month out in the desert practicing fundamentals/drills, then in addition to that I was shooting that weekly steel matchnearly every weekand also shooting 1 or 2 USPSA matches/month. I saw a lot of improvement during this time frame.





In June 2016 it starts to get super hot here and I was just getting lazy (always have been a lazy person lol). Between June 2016 and Oct 2016 I had been going to the weekly steel match only about 2x/month and shot about 2 USPSA matches... not once during this time frame did I go out to the desert to train fundamentals/drills.

In Oct 2016 I had taken a class from Pat Mac, he too is a very inspirational person to me. He's a funny mfer. Learned a lot in that class as well, the most valuable thing that I learned was that it exposed a lot of my weaknesses/short comings.



Now it's Nov 2016 and I've yet to get out to the range to practice fundamentals/drills (last time was May 2016). I'm not worried though, I'll reap what I sow yet again. I feel I've made good progress and will continue to do so.

For trust names are there any requirements or recommendations other than the word "Trust" at the end of it? I'm reading some things say it recommends at least having your last name or something that would make it easier to identify you as the owner of the trust in the event you had to prove it to LEO.

The only common recommendation I see is keeping the trust name short (easier to fit the engraved trust name on your weapon).

Since you are required to have your paperwork with you at all times when you have the gun out or in the safe, I don't think it really matters, since you will need to show your stamped form to the LEO anyway.

I'm not expert though, all my NFA stuff is via individual Form 4s and 1s.

I had drawn up plans to build a garage behind the house but I think I'm going to try and finish paying off the house and then build on to the house. The new baby has slowed those plans a little though.

I'm in the predicament that I need a new vehicle and I'm saving up rapidly for it so I'm trying to not spend money.

I probably should start putting away some money for that too. I don't put many miles on my Xterra but who knows what will break in another 3-4 years.
