This series is what I went with after a lot of looking around on the audio/video forum. It is the "extreme budget" category if you will...the least expensive than the audiophiles will acknowledge. It's only about $350 regular price on Amazon to get the center channel and two floor speakers for the sides. There are also bookshelf speakers. I used floor speakers for the surrounds as well as the fronts.

Skip the subwoofer though...a good sub costs more. Like, the baseline audiophile approved starts at a minimum $500 last I checked, with a sweet spot at $800.

just saw this on slickdeals. my whole setup is polk that I slowly pieced together with sale items from newegg, took me a little over a year. I like the way they sound so much rec polk for a good, budget not super crazy surround sound

Aw jeez, I completely forgot I was drunk at a bar watching the Jets game last night and after looking at this thread, I made an offer on a Focal subwoofer on Ebay. The guy just accepted the offer so I guess I'll have two subs now. Never drink and Ebay.

I mean I would not buythatsub. A worthwhile sub costs more. Something is better than nothing since basic economy floorspeakers powered by a standard receiver is going to offer effectively diddly below something like 120 hz (if that), but really, if you want legitimate low frequency extension, it's $500 or more for a new sub that is decent.

Maybe add the sub at a later date? I remember I was even blown away when I buddy got a cheaper one. Just not obsessed with it I guess.

Grill supposedly arriving tomorrow. Thinking of slow cooking something on sunday while I do blinds. Maybe.

I will say, I'm no audiophile. I have a mild setup in my truck that I love and none of my friends have complained.

I'll shop around and find something that works for me. I think I'll modify the stuff I have and add in some floor speakers.

Consider those Pioneer speakers with just the center and two floors for the sides, and the BIC F12 that's $213 listed right above this.

You will need an AVR (receiver) though. Yamaha, Denon, and Pioneer are probably the big 3 year, though there are a lot of others that make them as well. Probably figure $250-$400 for a decent enough 5.1 capable receiver from a mjaor manufacturer.

These kinds of things go on sale from time to time though if you really look around. The big box electronics stores, walmarts, newegg, amazon, etc, lots of competition for your money.


Hit up unforgiv3n about this stuff, he's in the industryI used to have a little polk 12" sub, for years. I liked it. Then I got the BIC F12...solid upgrade, really liked it.

Then I got an SVS PB2000 and I can't help but chuckle at how terrible those other two were. Movies are simply not the same, nor music. Getting usable legitimate output down to 20hz or less is amazing (the SVS is rated +/- 3db down to 17hz). A lot of the mass market less expensive subs might get you like 50hz...and with noticeably lower sound quality.

I sometimes legit have to pause or mute the TV to differentiate between it and actual thunderstorms approaching for example.

I'm gonna piece it all together a little at a time. It's not something I want to throw a ton of money at eighth now with the remodel and the car project. I just want to be able to hear what's going on if I'm on the other side of the room.

with the remodel, just make sure you get quality wires that are rated for in wall use then you can add/replace speakers as desired - invest in banana plugs also

Yeah it definitely won't go to waste. I have a Pinnacle Baby Boomer because I liked my previous Pinnacle speaker setup. Now I have a set of Focals and wanted to get a matching sub for it before they were too hard to find. Although I've never been too worried about having a sub match the rest of the speakers.

The Pinnacle has two 8" speakers at 600 watts and the Focal has one 11" at 450 watts, so it will be a good match.

Misc Firearms Crew LXII: Smokin' Meat and Packin' Heat

Took yesterday off and hit up the range with a friend from out of town.

He's from NJ so his shooting options are apparently rather limited, he said he usually goes to PA to shoot. Anyways, yesterday was his first time shooting beyond 100y as well as shooting steel.

He got cocky about shooting out past 400 and decided to put some money on it... which I gladly took.

Brisket crew, where do you buy your meat and how much do you pay per pound?

I only buy brisket at Costco or Sam's. It's been pricey lately at around $8/lb.

That's kind of the price I've been seeing too. At that point I feel like I should just buy prime rib when it's on sale at a pretty similar price.
