In a band situation an amp makes sense. However for getting decent tones at bedroom levels, recording those tones, and the overall consistency of having the same tone for practice and recording makes those cab sim/IR devices quite appealing.

The Axe-FX is an awesome piece of gear but I'd rather get the preamp tone from tubes where possible since it's convenient. The real PITA is the output section of an amp. Having to connect a load, the volume, cost of replacing power tubes and biasing, etc.

I can’t stand John 5, the others I agree with also. But what’s overrated about John Frusciante?

Bro's who use programs like BIAS fx, what speakers do you use? for some reason my headphones sound like garbage through my focusrite, I think it may be the adapter. I've messed with every setting and can't get a clean sound. Thinking about just getting some studio speakers, I see a lot of people with the KRK studio monitors.

What are you guys currently working on? I’ve been trying to get out of my comfort zone. Currently learning Song For George by EJ. Not really too hard so far. It’s just the timings a little weird. Kinda countryish which I’m not used to. Will report back when I’ve got it all.

Ehhh I’m not the biggest Frusciante fan but out of the well known guitarists his chord and lead work is pretty decent. Not ground breaking by any means but as you said the Drums and Bass in RHCP have a lot to do with it also

I’m still noodling but I’m finally about to finish my recording setup just need a good pair of studio monitors I’ve been spending a lot of money lately but I’m almost done.

I finally got a decent pedal collection to use with my OR15 and I have a condenser mic to record my amps in my Scarlett interface/computer needed a studio desk so I shelled out some cash for that also

I’m beginning to take my music a little more seriously lately even making new musician friends.

But I really need to come up with a structured practice routine.

I still can’t play any Malmsteen for chit

Kinda feel like if I make guitar how I used to be about lifting it'll be easier.

Not all EHX pedals sound the same.

Imo super expensive ODs are a waste.
In reality if you're looking to tighten up your Orange's brittle distortion for riffs you can use a standard ts-808, although that does have a lot of midhump.
You might also want to look into a Hermida Lovepedal for chewy, dumble-like lead tones.
+1 on the Soul Food...there are a bunch of Klone shootouts on youtube and Soul Food holds its own with more expensive Klones. The cheap Mosky ones are pretty decent, but not as good as the more expensive stuff.

For a bigger investment, the Ceriatone Centura is supposed to be an close as possible to exact clone of the original...but I think it's like $300.

I personally don't have a Klon right now...in it's place I'm running a Sweet Honey Overdrive. It's got a knob that lets you vary the attack (or sag) of the note, which is really cool. You can get kind of a humbucker sound (but noisier obviously) with single coils.

The Sweet Honey doesn't sound like a Klon though...if you want that sweet Klon midrange, you have to get a Klone.

I never really go in for new year resolutions, but thinking if anyone here is targeting anything guitar related for 2021? Be it mastering a new technique, or finally getting around to nailing that elusive solo?

I'll be working to improve my understanding of theory and how it applies to guitar. I'm self taught and have been neglecting that side of musicianship for too long.

My problem is I just keep playing Black Sabbath riffs and get distracted easily on Youtube

Similar position myself. I've been neglecting learning theory but now, at two years in, I think it's the next step in my progression. I know a couple of different scales but I don't understand them enough to be able to truly improvise or create music. The resources are all out there, but it's just a matter of getting disciplined.

I also don't typically go for resolutions but I'm going to hold myself more accountable to playing. I can string together a couple days of consecutive playing but I'm not as regimented with it as I am with, say, lifting. So my goal will be to play as close to daily as possible. Even if that means 15 minutes of practicing scales and chord shapes. I just need to build the habit of playing daily.

Should I buy this? Only 250 being made. I have a 2003 SG Faded with an Ebony board and Crescent Moon inlays I’m trying to sell. They said they’d give me $750 for it but I’m trying to make a little more off of it on Reverb since it’s a rarer guitar. If I get the Jackson I’d be coming out of pocket $550 not including the $100 I’d have to pay the post office to ship it for the trade in.
