Yeah suck shit, no need to kill in a regular fight. Tons of fights when I was a teen and no one got stabbed.

I dont know about the details in this case but there is also a difference in conspicuously brandishing a knife to deter someone and only stabbing them after they attack regardless, and pulling a knife and attacking instantly, I would wager the latter is what happened here aka pure aggression.
