lol@ the responsible and financially well off miscers in here..i'm spending over 50% of my monthly income on RENT (fuk, gotta get dat house soon. in a lease until next May)

brb rent is $1,523 a month. 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom on the other side of the water from Seattle.

brb net income is around $2,800. girlfriend pays for all utilities (power, internet) and toiletries though.

still never struggle for money, just can't go out and buy whatever i want at the drop of a hat.

I own several rental properties, and live in one of them now. The income from these properties completely covers all of my living expenses and then some.

I have a respectable day job, and a little side business. IMO, you must break the paycheck-to-monthly-bills cycle in order to build wealth.

when I was younger, I used to pay about 25-30% monthly income to rent

17.5% here. The highest I went was 31-32%.

Anything under 15% under 30 years old if you're living alone in your apartment I say is bull****.

35% but it's literally across the street from my job and my school (work at an academic medical center). Just doing this until I finish grad school, then wanna buy my first place. It's a basic studio in a luxury tower. The convinience was too tempting given I spend most of my time within a 0.15mile radius. Plus 24hr gym, pool, nearby restaurants, etc.

What about my claim of 5%? Definitely not living in a shed. Here's the key; make a good amount of money per year, but live BELOW your means. My life is virtually stress free, bills are easily paid per every month, and accounts increase each month.

It's all about the decisions you make in determining how relaxed or stressed your life becomes.

Dayum, came in thinking the op sounded steep. turns out that's exactly what I'm doing, but voluntarily.

Officially my mortgage is 26% of my income, but I'm overpaying another 2 thirds every month to save on interest and to own the house as quickly as possible,

making it 44% of net monthly income. Doesn't phase me, dunno what else I'd be blowing money on. I just test drove an upgrade and currently trying to make peace with the hideous mpg.

Either people are making a lot more money than me, or live in really cheap housing or with roommates.

Rent is $1100 for me, which is around 40% of my net pay(Net pay = After company takes my 401K contribution and my $200/month health insurance out).
It's around 25% of my gross pay.

all my house bills (ex food) totals around 15% (mortgage + london area). But im on dat CEO time so it could be 15% if chit really hits the fan, or it could be (and has been a few times) 0.75-1.5% . I hate the inconsistency of it. Genuinely really annoys me.

I'm at 19% right now of net, but it's a 4 bedroom house. Moving to the big city and it's probably going to double.

However, I am mid-career and have lots of room for growth so it'll be tough for the first few years but should ease up as time goes on.
