As a native Floridian, I lold hard.

When I was a kid, we'd get at least 1 hurricane per year predicted to hit us somehow. Guaranteed 1-2 days off regardless of how close the storm actually was. It got to the point where the school system built in "hurricane days" for our hurricane season (think snow days for the North). It was fuking awesome. Parents would let us go to the neighbor's house and play frizbee and volleyball and chit in the crazy winds while they got blackout drunk. Pretty dumb idea looking back, but there usually isn't a lot of danger up until a certain MPH point. We didn't live close enough to the water that flooding was an issue.

And then Charlie hit. I'll never forget how fuking terrifying it actually was. It banked at the last second and the eye went right over our house. I had one of those inflatable beach balls and me and my brother were going to go toss it around in the wind when my dad came out screaming at us to get inside. We ended up taking pillows, mattresses, basically anything soft, and creating a mini-bunker in our storage room. About 30 minutes later, the winds started picking up and you could hear trees snapping. The sound of 150 mph winds constantly wreaking havoc is nightmare inducing.

The eye was the scariest part. Hurricane Charlie was so compact that the eye was pretty small compared to other hurricanes. When the eye was over us, we went out to our porch to investigate the damage (radio and tv obviously weren't working so we didn't know wtf was going on). We thought it was over. Nope. Eye was just chilling over us. I've never seen black clouds spin and move so fast. I remember thinking it looked like you were standing in the middle of a carousel with black horses spinning around you. Dad yelled at us to get back inside and we hid in the makeshift bunker for a few more hours.

Didn't learn my lesson though, still go out and party whenever a hurricane is coming to town. Please Matthew, don't pepper my angus.

I went outside when Hurricane Katrina passed over us back in 05 i think it was. it was only like a cat 1 or 2 at the time.

I forgot the reason I went outside, but the wind was roaring and howling, and I chose not to look up at the sky..... I decided to duck down and stay low to the ground. a few seconds later, I turn around and look back to where I was just standing 20 seconds ago, and there's a large piece of metal sheet, about 6 ft x 6 ft sprawled across a bush right where I was before. It had flown through the air from somewhere and splattered the bush.


If I hadn't ducked, I woulda got hit by a large sheet of metal with jagged egdes flying through the air at 100+ MPH.


EDIT : oh i remember why i went outside now. the wind had ripped open a gate, and it was slamming hard back and forth in the wind, and if I didn't get it closed, it would have broken off and flown into something. probably my car which was right nearby.

Good thing it won't hit west Florida. Can't live without power and internet for a full week again.

Have a little bit of booze right now but will be getting some more today just to be safe.

Damn. That's some scary ****. Reminds me to make sure everything is tied down tonight. The problem is, I live in basically a retirement community now as opposed to the country when Charlie hit. None of the old fuks are here in the summer. If they have anything not tied down, that chit is flying everywhere.

Shouldn't be too bad for me in Jacksonville. My biggest concern is one of these massive hickory or oak trees falling down, and the fact that I don't have insurance : /

South florida brah checking in. I'm bailing the fuk out, headed up to NY this afternoon (knowing people with private planes FTW). I got a bad feeling about this storm, looks like it'll be cat4 and the center will be pretty fuking close to the coast, which means my place will be getting 100-130mph winds. No thx Jeff. Moved my bike and car to the garage at my parents place so at least I don't have to worry about them quite so much, but theres a couple bigass trees right next to my apartment. Hopefully I don't come back to a destroyed apt.

If I was on the Atlantic coast and not the Gulf coast, I'd already be gone. 150 mph gusts are no joke. We're only supposed to get 40 mph winds so we're just chilling. Weathermen are always potatoes though, never know what this storm is going to do. Angus is properly peppered for Matthew.

I don't know why people make fun of weather man...isn't a good thing that they are wrong? Better safe than sorry. The one time they are correct you will be ****ed. Better they scare you even if the risk is low. Nature isn't as predicable as one would think.

Just learned My daughters school will be closed the next two days.
