big 4 cpa brah checking in
ITT Mexico City business brah butt hurt and has nothing else to do on a Friday night but hate on accountants.
Can confirm I don't have much of a life currently. Working 50-60 weeks and not even in busy season yet.
Can confirm life sucks sometimes.
Can confirm not too far into my career big4 and 40%+ of my colleagues have left already
Most left because they didn't like it. Some thought it was alright but the $$$ on the other side was too nice to pass by. Some wanted to start families.
But they all had solid stable jobs on the other side that most tend to like. Can't hate that in today's economy. Should I have gone engineering? Maybe, sometimes I think that... I don't know.
Anyways accounting is an easy profession to pick on. I get that and that's fine. There are stiff requirements, lots of hours, not so much pay as it's a low margin industry and those at the top get the biggest chunk of the pie. You come in public accounting to get your experience, learn a thing or two and move on. It does make you think about what you want to do and where you want to go next.

First of all, big 4 pays anywhere from 55k-60k starting in audit, tax gets a bit more. You can make 100-110k beginning at age 28-29 if you stay (uncommon but very doable if you are willing to put in the work). Meanwhile marketing majors are still getting 40k range salaries.
But the salary isnt the point, the resume part is. Most high rank people in corporations are all big 4 alumni. Big 4 on the resume is literally the GOAT thing in business. Got friends in the firm heading out as seniors getting 6 figure jobs sub 30 years old lmao. U mad?

Big 4 grind to maybe make 100k at 30? Lol no thanks. Would much much much rather just suck it up a little longer and be an attorney. Or do none of that and enjoy my job and still make more.

Big4 is rotting, I know many of them. They are selling their soul for pitiful money, just hoping one day their big4 experience will get them a proper job.
Legit some of them are working from 7am to 11pm, I've even heard until 1am when it's really busy. This is for 50k per year starting lol.

You work a standard 40 hrs/week starting around 40-45k. It's a very easygoing job too with little stress, and that is worth a lot to some people.
And no I'm not an accountant, but I know people who are.

Accounting undergrad here...
whiel big4 is pretty much slavery it will give you good experience to move onto other sectors...
accountants are highly sought out for in the finance world and its very easy to transition from public accounting to different fields of business. accounting teaches you how a business really works and teaches you critical business decision making skills.
on the other hand, anyone ITT who believes that public accounting for a big 4 firm is "easy-going" and "stress-free" is wacko, the hours during busy season are 50-70 hours but in the Summer, Fall it is 35-45 hours. The busy season is the worst chit ever from what i've heard
i actually plan to go into public for 2-3 years then transition to private internal audit accounting which is MUCH MORE manageable in terms of having a life.

I think it's funny how the misc rotters are LMAOing at accountants average salary, considering it's one of the highest average salary professions in the country for "normal" jobs. And that is AVERAGE, I'm an accountant making much more than that and I've spent most of my career working 40 hour weeks.
Accounting is a good job if you don't have a strong passion for any particular career and want to get paid relatively well. Many of us work to live and do not live to work. There's nothing wrong with having a boring job that is relatively stress free and pays the bills.
How many people genuinely have jobs that they love doing and feel fulfilled by? Don't even try to convince me that selling used cars does this for you, OP. No ****, accounting isn't fun and exciting, most jobs aren't. I pretty much just listen to entertaining podcasts or audiobooks while doing my mindless spreadsheets for 8 hours and then look for my excitement and life fulfillment outside of the office

Even the profession that miscers seem to revere the most (engineering) sucks most of the time.
Let me introduce you to the life of an engineer:
Brb spending 2 years of my life developing this awesome new product for my company that's going to change the world, I'm so excited! Brb upper management decided they want to scrap this product and work on a different product instead, I literally just wasted 2 years of my life on nothing. Upper management broke the news to me while railing my wife from behind, I'm a huge cuck. Rinse and repeat

Can confirm. My brother is an accountant for a top 5 firm.
My ex gf was an accountant for PWC
My future ex gf's current bf is an accountant
Dadbod of peace. Thankless job. I mire my brother a tad though, he makes good money and travels a lot. But, brb, zero personality. The most BORING people. And safe people. Zero excitement or adventure in their lives.
My ex drinks a lot now. Hell we drank a lot while she was getting the degree. She was tested for aspergers as a kid though, so I'm sure that's her way of coping with all of the office small talk and recruiting.
I'm trying to convince my brother to let me go on client dinners for him.(we are twins, though I'm in better shape, so couldn't pull it off) He has zero social skills. Very robotic. I just want a free steak and nice glass of wine on the company card while I share some laughs with these *******s

As someone that works in the accounting field I can tell most of the people dogging accountants don't own a business. So basically you guys really don't know how much work we do since you think we only use spreadsheets all day. I have not once worked 80hrs a week during tax season most would be 55ish since i have to work on Saturday. There is a lot of things involve for accountants to do in order to have a business running properly. Quarterly payroll reports, making sure client made there 941 deposit on time, sales tax, compilations, reviews and bookkeeping to name a few.

Lol so much hate.
Fact is you get qualified at a big 4 and the doors open for you in so many positions just after 3 years. 3 years of exams and pretty long hours suck, but it's short term pain for long term gain

Just lol at the idiots in this thread.
- graduated and made 52k in ****en ohio
- get 10% a year raises plus at least 5k bonus
- if I average my hours over 52 weeks it's 42 hours a week
- 30 days vacation
- 3 years later making 75k
- on pace for 100k at 5 years
- can work 4 9 hour days and peace out at noon on Fridays
- get at least 1 recruiter a week trying to set me up with a better paying firm

Ehh...not bad making six figures at under 30Accounting bruh checking and you are sugercoating the **** out of this just to make your self feel better. I did the corporate work for 2 years and you are literally wasting your life in a office. During busy season you can go in at 8am and leave at 11pm just to be back at 8am the next day.
HERE IS THE REAL DEAL WITH ACCOUNTING
EDUCATION : The amount of education needed to start at 55k is UNREAL. You are pretty much not an accountant without a CPA so if you are gonna do accounting you will need your CPA to make the big bucks. To do that you will need 150 credit hours from school (regular bachelor degree only gives you 120). This means you will need to double major (reason i did accounting and business management degree) or you will need to get a Masters Degree in Accounting or Tax... so that is about 6 years of schooling..Think about the money and time you are spending here just to start at FUKKKIN 55k a year working 60-90 hrs a week if you are lucky.... Masters in Accounting at my school was $36k alone.
CPA EXAM : So lets say you went through all the trouble to actually qualify for the exam you need to pass the CPA exam and it is the biggest piece of **** test possible. Some say that it is even harder then bar exam....to me it wasnt so much hard as it was BS with so much information. There are 4 exams and each exam you study for 2-3 months with soo much material only to get tested on maybe 10% of the **** you studied. The exam passing rate for each one of those is 40-50% so yes most people struggle with it and remember these are the people that got two degrees or masters in college. The fees for this exam quickly add up you are looking at 2-3k at least including the study material and thats if you pass all the exams on first try which is unusual.
WORKING FOR BIG 4 : By putting in the work you should mention that about 4-6 months a year you are working 70-90 hours a week during busy season and other time you are putting in 50-70 hours a week. You do this all for $50 K a year and when calculating hourly rate you get about $12-$13 an hour maybe less. If you can stick to doing this for 4 years yes you can earn 100k a year but you will still be working 70-90 hours during busy season and have no life. HOWEVER most people leave big 4 in two years (some smarter people less ) because they burn the fuk out...Only the no life losers actually stay slaving away at big 4 many neglecting their families to slave away for those fukkin companies.
THE WORK : The work is boring as **** no matter if you are in tax or audit. If you are in audit you are literally looking at numbers that the company reported and trying to get all the evidence to see if that is actually what they should have reported. So if company says they have 100k in accounts receivable you will get all their receipts and calculate that they did in fact get 100k in accounts receivable for the year if so check mark and move on to the next one. 99% of the time everything checks out so imagine doing all this work and its always correct BORING...the 1% it doesnt check out you dont get to say AH HUH i see you trying to cook the books nope....if you catch the company doing something shady you dont say anything negative about them because they are paying you to audit them. You try to work it out with the management and if it is really bad your audit firm will just leave the client... you wont be able to go out and tell everyone i audited this company and they are fukkin lying nope the company you work for will just drop the client. Tax is tax do i even need to say how boring it is ?
CLIFFS
You go to school for about 6 years spending 1000's taking 100's of exams to qualify to become CPA ...then you take 4 bs exams where you study 2-3 months for each exam and pay $2-3k in fees and study material to be able to start making 50-55k a year working 70-90 hours for about 3-4 months out of the year and other times working 50-70 hours. I DO NOT RECOMMEND ACCOUNTING TO ANYONE. The only reason i would recommend someone do accounting is if you plan on owning your own business which is what i did.

U mad?

Ehh...not bad making six figures at under 30
First off you get to 150 in 5 years max. Every firm worth its **** pays for the exam and pays you a couple grand bonus. It doesn't come out of your ****en pocket.
Second anyone who stays big 4 after 2 years is a moron and has 0 reason to ever talk bad about public accounting. I did 1 year and the most I worked was 70 hours once. I'm now a senior at a regional firm making 75k working MAX 55 hours 2 weeks during busy season. Oh and I get 30 days vacation that roll over. This year I started with 43 ****en days.
The only people who work a ton of hours are those who are stupid or have their head so far up a Sr managers ass.

But barely anyone at Big4 is making 150k after 5 years and I know for a fact a lot are pulling 70+ hour weeks on the reg because they reply to my emails at 8pm or later on a fairly regular basis.

Don;t know what it's like in the US but in the UK a majority genuinely do Audit at a big 4 purely for the qualification and then leave after three years. So much so that in your induction they'll mention that a lot of you won't be here after three years because they know you're using them for the qualification and getting the big four on your cv, and they need cheapish labour.
I think there's a stat that 80% of FTSE 100 boards have an ACA qualified person on it (main accounting qualification in the country) - along with the CFA it's arguably the best qualification to have in the corporate world, especially when it's from the big four. Most big four qualified people I know left after three years and go into corporate finance, management consultancy, become FCO's etc. Getting the ACA at a big four is one of best bases for a career.

As far as to become an accountant. From what I understand the test is stressful for cpa. My ex had to pay and spend tons of time on those Becker books or whatever. Both my brother and my ex came out of pocket for all of that

Bragging about 100k salaries at 30 years old. I know tradesmen making double that, salesmen, operations managers, IT guys, engineers as wel, all making 6 figures by the 30 mark. All without having to spend the best years of their lives doing mind numbing work that adds no true value. Without having to pull insane hours working while studying for CPA. For the amount of time, energy, and effort put into an accounting career, the pay off is mediocre at best. Sure you can do well at the top end of the profession, but you can do just as well if not better in tons of other fields without having to put im nearly the same amount of commitment.
The sad part is what youre describing is like the pinnacle of success for accountants. Most dont even go big 4 and will be lucky to see six figures at any point in their career.
A lot of accountants are pretty damn miserable and only seem to tolerate the profession because its a safe and relatively secure ticket to a middle class lifestyle

Everyone knows what big 4 is for. It's not for idiots who make it a career. A lot of top paying jobs require big 4 experience, that's why you do the bare minimum and tell them to fuk off.
